I recently wrote a review of a book by Mitch Albom called The Five People You Meet In Heaven. Since I read that book partly because of my appreciation for another book written by Mitch Albom called: Tuesdays With Morrie I thought that I would also review: Tuesdays With Morrie. Also, just like the Mitch Albom book I wrote about I am also entering this one in Msmorvays, Resurrecting the Oldies Book Write Off. http://www.epinions.com/content_4867465348
Tuesdays with Morrie is book about the meaning of life taught by a man who was dying. The dying man was a former professor and his last lessons were taught to one former student on Tuesday afternoons at his home.
Tuesdays with Morrie is Memoir written by Mitch Albom a former sports writer who after graduating from college, and not finding his dreams began to search for the meaning of life.
One evening while flipping channels, Mitch came across a channel that had Ted Koppel interviewing one of his favorite college professors Morrie Schwartz. Morrie Schwartz was being interviewed by one of the most famous broadcasters of all time because he was dying and he had refused to be sad about it. Instead he became an idea man writing down small ideas and life philosophies on post it notes and envelopes or what ever happened to be near by. He had managed to gather up at least 50 ideas on paper and he shared these philosophies with his friends, one of those friends sent them to the Boston Globe and soon Ted Koppel wanted to interview him.
Mitch had promised Morrie that he would visit him after he graduated but like many of us who say we will visit people he never did. But after Mitchs favorite uncle and biggest influence on him passed away; Mitch found himself searching for something more in life and after seeing Morrie on television he knew he had to see him. He had to know that how Morrie faced with death was able to maintain such a wonderful attitude about life.
After Mitch visited Morrie for the first time he called him up and Morrie asked if he was visiting soon, he said that he could and they made a date for the next Tuesday. Soon Mitch was meeting with Morrie every Tuesday and each Tuesday Morrie would give Mitch lessons on the meaning of life and death. Mitch met with Morrie until the end of Morries life.
The book goes on to detail those Tuesdays and what Morrie was able to teach Mitch. Most people would be wise to listen to the words written in this book. They are positive and they are wise, and they are very true to life.
This is a very inspirational book, as well as a good story about two men experiencing different stages of life. After reading it I wanted to reach out to my loved ones, especially my children (who are all grown up), and my brother who lives two states away. I felt like I need to tell those I love that I loved them. As Morrie said in the book it is never to late.
Morrie never denies in the book that he is dying in fact he talks about it openly but with out fear or remorse just simply and honestly stating that the end was near, and he was never shy about talking about what he was experiencing physically, but he always remained positive, and he wanted to share his years of knowledge and experience so his time with Mitch was just as important to him as it was to Mitch.
The book itself is not very large, there are not that many pages and it is a relatively easy read. This is a book you could easily read in a day or two if you are so inclined. I did not do this however. I read it a chapter at a time and didn't read the next chapter until the next day. That way I was able to let what I had read sink in a little better. It also helped me to remember the positive messages has to offer.
If you are looking for the meaning of life or some meaning of life, or if you yourself are ill this is a good inspirational book. It will help you to think positively and it will also encourage you to pass your knowledge, and experience on to others. It will also encourage you to reach out to those you love. I think it would be difficult to not be touched by Tuesdays With Morrie.
