An example of a bad town - not necessarily the worst, but pretty close to it...

Piscataway NJ Armpit of State should change to two word lower body part (Reply to this comment)

Your excellent article 3/14/09 on Piscataway NJ, "Armpit of the State" was most welcome. It came at a time when I am having the same problem. I was mailed a summons for something I did not do. I will be most happy to furnish you with a copy of my letter to my insurance company explaining what happened after my court hearing. I can not give you information that will be used in court or they may add additional fines than they already want for something I did not do.

I will be able to get back to you in a couple of weeks with the information and copy of
my letters.

Piscataway Dwellers.... (Reply to this comment)
by shoehorny
Sigh. Ho-hum. Yes, I admit I agree with some of the positive attributes of living in Piscataway. Rail service with free parking, eh? I didn't know that! Best sports in NJ? Bah! I don't buy that at all. Fairview Golf is nothing overly special. I have better golf in my new backyard. Traffic going to Rutgers is improving, after the state invested millions of dollars to improve the roads (at the cost of loosing acres of wood lands). Still, traffic crawls through most of Piscataway. After moving out to Hunterdon County I would never, ever move to that area! Recently I noticed more strip malls, cheap housing units, and stores going up. Sure looks like more traffic will be coming through soon. I guess some people like that lifestyle. I hope you like that too! Have a nice day!

Forbes just voted Piscataway the Most Livable Metro-Suburb in Greater New York Area (Reply to this comment)
by wjcheng
Forbes just voted Piscataway the Most Livable Metro-Suburb in Greater New York Area on Oct 11, 2007, so apparently, what other review says are mostly disagreed with by Forbes. Piscataway is a wonderful town to live and travel.

The open land mentioned in other review was finally sold to Piscataway Township due to the practical real estate market, and the owner was happy for the money he got. The land is now designated as a Community Park, it is going to be like Central Park of Manhattan in NYC.

Piscataway has 3 huge golf courses that many residents can enjoy, so are the visitors. One is the smaller one called Fairway Golf Center that has the best minigolf in New Jersey, given the fact I visited several dozens of minigolf in NJ. It also has all year drive range and coach. Across street of Stelton is Stelton Lanes where you can enjoy Bowling all year round too.

Another nice much bigger golf place is Raritan Landing behind Piscataway municipal office and police station that is one of the best golf course in Central Jersey, yet very affordable. You won't regret to come and play with your family for a nice weekend, and then, of course, you may join as membership. You may even like many other people eventually move to Piscataway.

The third one is belong to Rutgers University that located near Hoes Ln of Piscataway. It is also very close to famous Johnson Park where one can hike, bike, play tennis, baseball, BBQ, fishing, visit museum, ...etc, and there is a little zoo big enough for your little kids for a nice weekend, especially the nice playground nearby.

You may also find nice 26 parks in Piscataway that has brand new playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, hockey rings, baseball fields...etc. At newly renovated Columbus Park, even outdoor concertn series during summer time. No wonder Sports Illustrated named Piscataway the #1 Sports town in New Jersey.

Piscataway has 5 exists on Fwy 287 from exit 5 to 9, and currently the whole highway in this area is being repaved and expanded, after years of appeals, and soon after it is done, it would be even much easier for visitors to visit Piscataway for a nice weekend, or just stop by before heading New York City.

In fact, many tourist visting New York City often chose hotels in Piscataway area because there are virtually 5 train stations from different area of Piscataway to take train into Manhattan, depending on where one stay, and the weekend parking are FREE!

No wonder, many nice hotels built in the area for past years, including brand new Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn which I like the most since they are 2* hotel rate, yet 4* bedroom. These are brand new concepts of famous hotel chain like Hilton and Marriott. Of course, you also find nice Embassy Suites and nearby Hyatt which could be a great stop of rest passing by Piscataway.

For past few years, the whole town has been changed dramatically due to nice new mayor, new high school principal, all 10 schools expanded and renovated due to the fact many schools were named blue ribbon in NJ and many families prefer to move here, rent or buy. If you look at craigslist ( http://cnj.craigslist.org/search/rfs?query=piscataway stn just sold&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max ) you will see Piscataway has been one of very few towns whose real estate has been very active in past years when the whole nation's real estate market slow, and that explains Piscataway is great town to live and also shows Forbes article.

Greater Piscataway has been name top 3 safest area in New Jersey, and one reason is that Piscataway's police has sufficient man power to provide that security town for the resident and visitors. There are many visitors shop and eat at Piscataway each year, with a safe environment and affordable cost of stay, tourists love to come.

No wonder, you can find all kind of name brand restaurants, big or small in Piscataway area such as Long Horn, Red Lobster, IHOP, Penera Bread, Catrina, TGI Friday, Bear Rock Cafe, Nanking, Hometown Buffet, Grand Shanghi, Chand Palace, Long Horn, Gabriels, Pizza Uno, Red Lion,...etc. If you live here and eat out often, you will see all these restaurants always have their parking lots close to full.

Even better, Piscataway High School has Environmental Club whose students sweep thru the whole town and pick up trash wherever they seen, yet, they also call the township Publis Works whenever they saw the pot holes. For area really dirty, they also call the township Health Department to enforce. This also part of the effort of Piscataway Rotary Road Side Cleaning effort that they would make sure streets clean and repaved for community open houses of realtors.

Even nicer, it also has a nice team of residents to provide emergency road side assistance. They are equipped with portable jumpstarters that can help visitors jump start their car on the road, at the parking, ...etc. They also help people with flat tire to inflate the tire to drive to auto service.

For past years, the Rt 18 has been renovated and expanded, now all traffic lights were removed, and coming to Piscataway and Rutgers Univ can be even easier and faster from NJ Turnpike, almost all 65 mph highway access that makes the town even more desirable. For example, there are many activities in Rutgers Univ that open to public, and Piscataway residents have the great advantage to be in town like Football, Basketball, concerts, ...etc.

As I see, Piscataway going to be even prosperous for the following reasons:

1. After 911 and gas price hike, many people chose to commute with train, and Piscataway has easy access to 6 NJ Transit Train stations: Edison, Metuchen, New Brunswick, Dunellen, Bound Brook, and Plainfield, depending on where one lives.

2. Due to education cost surges for past decade, many talent students choose to attend public university, and Rutgers Univ is the largest and best public university in New Jersey. You will see Rutgers Univ will become top university like UC Berkeley and U Michigan.

3. Due to the fact, Piscataway has Raritan River, train lines and many highways around while has lots of green acres, Feng Suei wise, it shall be booming.

4. Piscataway High School won for past few years many top prize in New Jersey state wide competitions such as NJ Science League Competition on Biology, Chemistry, Physics... and Math Olympiad, FBLA Business competitons...etc. This year, even ranked 20's student got admitted to Stanford Univ from Piscataway High, in addition to Columbia Univ, Princeton, U Michigan, ...etc, although many top students chose to go to Rutgers Univ for full scholarship with full or close to full SAT scores. A great high school and school district often one big factor for young families choose the town to live.

5. Piscataway got lots of affordable apartments for young families to start with, even for graduate students to rent. These tenants, after years of living in Piscataway, often chose to buy condo/townhouse in town as their first home, and therefore, move up buyers can easily sell their unit to move to bigger home as their kids grow. Because Piscataway has lots of land, even the most luxury new house that Warren needs $1m can get at Piscataway for $700k. e.g. Rolling Hill at Warren and River Heights at Piscataway. For low end houses, mid $200k to $300k one can get a nice 3br ranch, and the reason houses in town tend to be affordable because many residents working at Wall St seemed to prefer condo/townhouses. So, there is great diversity and great advantage for everyone here.

Regarding Truth-Speaks' comments, if you knew me, I don't think you would consider me a loser. I am honored that you became an Epinions member to add your opinion to my review of Piscataway. The beauty about this country, and the people that live here, is that we are permitted to speak freely and openly about what we believe in. I live in New Jersey, and relatively close to Piscataway. I am often forced to travel through the area to get where I am going. I still feel the same as I do when I wrote my original review. I sometimes shop at the stores in Piscataway and occasionally talk to the people who reside there. Many complain about how poorly the township is run. Aside from that, more trees were cut down to allow for the expansion of Route 18. I estimate over 1,000 trees were cut down...Still, traffic is congested, more houses are being built on every scrape of land available, strip malls, farm land is being sold off. Regarding the incident with the cop, prosecutor, and judge, that was an example of a personal incident that demonstrated the corruption in this area...rubber stamp justice. I apologize if I hurt your feelings with my opinion, but I've seen much better in this state - in almost every town I've been in. If you feel so strongly about the positive attributes of this area, please feel free to write your own Epinions review, now that you are a member. But please don't call me a loser, because you don't know me. Thanks! Mike

I disagree (Reply to this comment)
by truth_speak
The guy is obviously a loser. Just because he got a traffic ticket he has decided to bad mouth the town. If you ask me I have lived in several places around the state both in central and northern NJ and I would rate Piscataway the best. It combines the best of suburban living with closeness to major metropolitan centers and it lies at an ideal location between NYC and Philli. The trains station of New Brunswick and Dunellen with connections to NYC are extremely close. Being the location of several high tech industries/academic centers like Telecordia, ATT, Amhersham, IEEE and American Standards institute it attracts the best brains into the community which also ensures high academic and competitive standards at the township schools. Its an extremely diverse and broad minded community and includes people of all religions/backgrounds including White, Afro-American, Asian Indian, Pakistani, Orientals and several others. Since its right next to Rutgers several of the faculty members have made this township their home. In fact the present president of Rutgers was also brought up right here in Piscataway. It is also less than 25m from the Princeton university.

The writer complains about the lack of trees. I guess the traffic ticket cut short his visit and he just has not had a good chance to have a look around the town. The township has more parks than most of other towns in Central NJ which are crowded and congested. Along the Raritan River lies a vast expanse of green in Johnson park with several groves, picnic areas and a fitness trail. There are farms here (as acknowledged) and along the Centennial avenue and South Randolphville road the roads have a very rustic and idyllic feel which is a rarity in central new jersey. In fact the environment is so unpolluted that in the night I see more stars here than in other places in Central NJ.

Piscataway - many things to many people (Reply to this comment)
by knitsafghans
Piscataway is really not a town as such - more a township; my biggest complaint is that it lacks a town center. I've lived in Piscataway for 16 years in a beautiful neighborhood on a tree-lined circular block surrounded by an ecological preserve and Rutgers campus, a .3 mile walk or bike ride to Johnson Park, and a slightly longer walk to New Brunswick and Highland Park. I can't complain (except about the deer that come out of the old growth forest preserve into my backyard and munch on any flowers I plant - but that doesn't fit the "urban sprawl" image painted by the first comment - so I'll just hush).

What's your beef on Piscataway? (Reply to this comment)
by montequi
Sounds like the writer of this article has some personnal vandeta against Piscataway based on a rude cop and judge. Yes, Piscataway is starting to build a bit more than I would like, but take a drive down Centennial (west of Washington) and note the nicely landscaped fascilities of the non-polluting industries. These industries keep Piscataway taxes lower than comperable towns.

If you're looking for sprawl, take a ride through South Plainfield or Bound Brook or Woodbridge or Edison or just about any other town in Middlesex County (sure, Bound Brook is Somerset county, but it looks frightingly similar to South Plainfield). Or, hell, what about Union county? How many of you would prefer to live in Elizabeth or Newark?

Armpit?! Please!!!

Don't judge a book by its cover!!! (Reply to this comment)

I have grown up in Piscataway, living in the house that my father grew up in, and his father before him. After reading the review of Piscataway, I was very offended. I feel that there are many facts that were misconstrued. First of all, Cornell Dairy Farm, the one mentioned in the review, is the last working farm in the area, and contrary to the sign posted at the farm, the community pulled together and petitioned against the taking of this property. As for the traffic, yes we have a problem, but it is a recent development, and already the town is in process of solving it. The high school band has the title of the "2002 State Championship Band" for group 5, and has been invited to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade (only the 3rd band in the state to ever be asked). The high school football team will be playing for the State Championship the weekend of Dec. 7th. The high school mock trial team has placed among the top in the region. And these are just some of the many accomplishments of the youth of the town. One can never enter one our many stores without holding a conversation with at least one stranger. Neighbors are always more than willing to help each other with yard work and house renovations. In Piscataway, there is no minority, we are a multicultural diverse community, and here children are raised without discrimination. The reason I read this article was because I was working on a paper for my Criminal Justice class at Rutgers University, describing the worst problem in my home town. And as for being a "bad town", I believe it is far from, after completing several interviews with the police and community members I have learned that the worst problem in Piscataway is the traffic, not drugs, robberies, gangs, or any other form of violence, just traffic. And if the your opinion of a bad town is one that has traffic then yes Piscataway is not for you.

Locals! (Reply to this comment)

Hi -
I live in Pennsylvania (we're practically neighbors)! Although I don't know much about NJ and have never been to Piscataway, it doesn't sound very appealing. However, if Piscataway is the armpit of New Jersey, I think DELAWARE is the armpit of the country. Yuk!
