Pros: Regardless of platform, this is a great game with multiple endings
Cons: Few changes to SNES version, sorta like Final Fantasy Anthology
The Bottom Line: Plot twists, multiple endings, and a slew of hidden characters and items give this game a high replay value. SNES graphics, but this IS a re-release ya know!

| orion5182's Full Review: Ogre Battle Limited Edition The March of the Black... |
Ogre Battle was not a huge-selling Super NES game along the lines of Final Fantasy 3, but it was nevertheless one of the best RPG/Strategy games released for that platform. With the SNES having gone the way of the Dodo, I am glad to see this title available for Playstation. Along with Final Fantasy Anthology and Centipede, this is one of the best Playstation re-releases of all time. The graphics and sound stay remarkably true to the SNES version, which could ultimately be a bad thing if you're into the Playstation's killer graphics capabilities.
What makes this strategy game different is the huge number of paths and storylines that can occur due to how your hero is perceived. As a hero commanding a massive rebel army, your actions in battle determine how good or evil your character is viewed as. For example, observers will not care for your army obliterating enemy troops with a lower level than your own. Also, if the enemy recaptures a town you once liberated, your reputation goes down. Drawing Tarot cards also determines luck and acceptability, but that is a whole matter altogether.
The story of Ogre Battle can take remarkable twists and turns, depending on how good or evil your hero is. If your hero is moderately liked, then certain key characters will not join your side as the game progresses. However, becoming truly evil will also win you followers...although, they will be wicked and sinister of course. This game has close to a dozen endings and there are numerous ranks that your characters can attain, ranging from Knights to Gryphons to one of many different kinds of Dragons.
Strategy veterans should be able to figure this game out in a relatively short amount of time (as opposed to say, RPG Maker), but you will needs lots of practice when it comes to playing Tarot cards at the right moment and doing just the right amount of battle tactics to make your reputation rise. After all, it IS possible to beat the game and wipe out the evil empire only to become a bloodthirsty ruler yourself!
