The Bottom Line n/a
Off and running... * You know, my motto after 9/11 was "we need to kick some a*s", but I don't think I'd write a song about how you better not mess with "the red, white and blue" otherwise "the bombs will drop on you" or whatever the hell the lyric is to that irritating Toby Keith song. Can you say "song made strictly for publicity?" Why am I not surprised that it was a backwater hick who wrote something like that? * So I wonder what the latest RIAA excuse for low album sales will be after the Dave Matthews album opened at #1 with over 650,000 units sold in its first week. Of course, this is the album where 9 of the 11 songs were available to anyone who had an internet connection and a search engine in the past 18 months, but yet, it still debuted at #1 with all those copies sold. If they really want some reasons, I'll give them three: 1)Poor quality: People aren't going to shell out $15 for crap. There's NOTHING that's really captivated music audiences at all. Nothing has any longevity anymore, it's in the Top 200 for 6 months and then down down down it goes. 2)MTV: MTV plays videos but not nearly as many as they used to. If Weezer had made their Muppets video say 8 years ago, it would catapult Maladroit to 5 million in sales easily. Why can I say that? Two words, Buddy Holly. Now though, you're lucky to catch something like that at all. 3)Radio: Radio's role in breaking new artists has declined drastically. * Speaking of that Weezer Muppets video, that thing is like my new instant cheerer upper. That's easily the best video made in the last 5-6 years, if not longer. * Oh yeah, and speaking of the record industry, there's an excellent article about the current price war here: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/211/nation/It_s_yours_for_a_song+.shtml * Let me get this straight: some fans are disappointed in Linkin Park's remix album. Um, hello, the songs sucked before, did you really think tinkering with them would make them any better? Although, personally, my favorite review on this site of that album is the one where the reviewer states they had no idea it was a re-mix album until they looked at the tracklist on the back. HELLO!!! MCFLY!!! Sh*t, if that's the case, no wonder they released it. It's only been what, 6 months since news came of it being prepared and somehow you don't KNOW THIS? * OK, so Nick Lachey, former tough guy bad a*s in 98 Degrees is now going to make a solo album? Yeah, that will go over REAL well... * People say that Avril Lavigne is manufactured. Perhaps that's true, but let's think about this. Alicia Keys tells her first record label she won't record covers for her debut. They drop her, only to watch her sell 5 million copies of her debut on Clive Davis' new label. Would YOU want to be the executive responsible for letting Avril go, after SEEING what happened with Alicia Keys? Methinks you're gonna say ok and hope she hits big. * There are plenty of interviews with Robert Plant in music magazines this month, among them Spin and Blender. But nothing is nearly as good as the Playboy interview, which can be found here (You gotta be over 18 kiddies, lol): http://www.playboy.com/arts-entertainment/comversation/plant/index.html * OH JOY, the Strokes are going to bless us with a headlining US tour in the fall. Gag me already with that obnoxiousness. Is it too late to remove 2 of the 3 stars I gave their album last fall? * In a new Total Guitar magazine poll of the top 100 guitarists, the awe inspiring Noodles (#30) finishes ahead of: Pete Townshend (#33), The Edge (#31), Jonny Greenwood (#35), Chuck Berry (#36), Joe Perry (#39), and Peter Green #56), among many others. Oh yeah, and the pop punk boys from Blink 182 and Sum 41 were ridiculously high too. And one more gripe: Kurt Cobain at #14 is a joke. #1 is Hendrix for those wondering. * There's also an interesting take on The Who and specifically, the late John Entwistle, from his ex wife here: http://entertainment.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4459,4792758%255E10431%255E%255Enbv,00.html * So 3 members of Slipknot recently took off their masks in side projects...oh my! The mystery! The intrigue! Oh my GOD! They look...like...NORMAL F*CKING GUYS, WHAT A F*CKING SHOCKER THAT WAS!!! * Under a week now until Kay Hanley releases her solo debut. I really can't wait, Kay kicks some major a*s. * I gotta give it up to Def Leppard. Not many bands could have their last hit be a decade ago (1992) and have a new album still debut at #11 on the Billboard chart. That truly IS impressive. 10 years ago this week they had the #24 album in the country, the quintuple platinum Adrenalize. Not only that, but their Greatest Hits album, Vault, is the number one Pop Catalog album in the country this week. * If you see Andrew W.K., smack him for evidently singing She Is Beautiful with Kelly Osbourne. That's one of the tracks featured on the new Ozzfest live disc, due out next month. * If you live in Seattle, I'd just like to say "YOU SUCK!!!" Even though it was apparently taken down, there was a note up at Pearl Jam's official Tenclub.net site that a pair of nights was being reserved at Key Arena this fall for a "certain band." GRRRRRR!!!! That's enough for now, I don't want to bore you guys to death. :) |
