Very smart to spread the acclaim and declare lots of runner-ups early on.
I see I rated this guy over a year ago, but felt I'd return the favor with a comment.
More agreement than disagreement, which is always nice. Haven't seen some: the Kurosawa film or Ball of Fire. I like Howard Hawks very much so I'm feeling guilty I left him off my list. And Red River is a good choice. As is Paisan, although I might have went with Open City.

Dear Stephen: Just looking over these Best of the Decade lists with the thought of doing the rest of my own.
Your list certainly illustrates the problem of picking just ten from the 1940's. I rather think that would be true of the 1930's and 1950's, too. Not so hard for years prior or following (though the 1970's might toss up some conflicts of choice).
It is an almost impossible task, and so I give your struggles a Very Helpful.
Regards.

I like Myrna Loy in "Best Years of Our Lives" (and most everything she ever did) but the movie seems loose and overlong (in my fairly dim memory, though I saw it many times when I was growing up).

For me, Capra was a 30s director and "Philadelphia Story" is a 30s film that came out in 1940. "Lost Weekend" is part of what gets Wilder the award for range. I mentioned "The Big Sleep" twice and "Philadelphia Story" once.
I like "Kind Hearts and Coronets," but didn't think of it.

...toss in my two cents'....first, for a Capra flick, presumably "It's A Wonderful Life." You ARE a little light on comedies, as one is wont to be with such lists. My mind also moves to "The Philadelphia Story", or either "Arsenic and Old Lace" or "Kind Hearts and Coronets" as masterpieces of the genre worthy of consideration. I'm also partial to "Fantasia" for breaking new ground in music and animation that really hasn't been outdated yet. And the horror of "The Lost Weekend" has always stayed with me, especially when our hero goes through the DTs. I'm a big fan of "White Heat," and also of "The Big Sleep."
Ah, well. There's never enough room in a grouping of 10, even with your addenda of others you opted to keep out.
Good post.

I have videotape with bad sound and picture quality, and it still knocks me out. I hope that there is a print well conserved. I also wonder what was supposed to occur in part 3,

Yeah, "Out of the Past" shoulda been in the list of noires on the way to "Double Indemnity," probably with Lang and Ophuls ones.

Doesn't Jacques Tourneur (Out of the Past, Cat People, etc.) merit a mention?

Yeah. I must have mentioned 30-40 on the way to a "top ten" list of 13.

Wilder had quite a range, with the much honored "Lost Weekend" in the 40s and "Sunset Boulevard" about to come. If I do a 50s list, it will have to be a hundred to include multiple Wilder and Kurosawa and Ford and Hawks entries.

TEN is just to small a number for the great films of the 40's, isn't it? Great choices though!

Some great picks (and pix)!
"Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Montgomery Clift, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Claude Rains, and Barbara Stanwyck." Thanks for giving some electrons to some great actors. And directors, Hawks, Wilder. Just saw some like it hot, again! Loved it, although not Wilder's best.
