I know nothing about hunting... (Reply to this comment)

I don't know anyone who hunts. I've never hunted. And probably never will. But this was a fantastic review! Kudos to you!

I myself would never hunt (Reply to this comment)
by AliventiAsylum
but I don't object to others doing it.
What I do object to and where I think hunting go the bad reputation was in the earlier part of the 20th Century, many people "hunted" but not for food, simply for sport and left the carcasses behind. Teddy Roosevelt, while a great proponent of our National Parks, was guilty of this himself.
I believe hunting can be done responsibly, and that is the key to the entire issue for me.

I assume if I were an animal, I would rather be killed by a hunter in the wild than by being herded into a slaughter house.
A very difficult subject indeed and something I could never do personally. Most of my questions are how someone could look into the eyes of something so beautiful like a deer and be able to kill it. I am just too sensitive for that I guess : )
Also- The arugment of "keeping animal population under control" is a sore spot with me. Esp. because I live in an area where there is almost no place for wildlife to be. We just keep developing and taking their land, then we complain when they run out on the highway.

- You presented all the sides.

Really none of the animal goes to waste. Rodents and small animals eat the bones which provide them with calcium and other nutrients. Bones also provide these nutrients to the ground, same as if the animal died naturally. Then the guts feed coyotes (wolves if you have them), dogs, and other meat eating/scavenging animals in the forrest. I take the meat home and usually I give the skin to anyone who wants a nice rug/blanket/wall hanging. So really none of the animal goes to waste. -J

Ever heard of Angus all natural beef? They don't give their animals steriods. They don't keep them caged up. They don't brutally kill their animals. Sure, Angus beef costs more, but to me it's worth it knowing the animals are treated better and they don't have any drugs in their system. I know several Angus certified beef farmers back home and those cows have the good life. Something to think about, paying a little more for better treatment of the animals and no drugs. -J

Nice review (Reply to this comment)

I just wanted to comment on how our domesticated animals are treated. Recently the NY Times had an eye-opening article on beef production - the cows have little space to move, are fed food - corn - that makes them sick because they can't properly digest it, and then must be given antibiotics so the corn doesn't kill them. So much for grain-fed beef, huh? Although I don't personally hunt, I don't see how most responsible hunting can be considered more cruel than what we already tolerate - except of course for vegans.
I think your editorial epinion brought up very legitimate points for people to think about. Good job.

I would personally never ever hunt. I feel that if a person does hunt, though- they should be compelled to use every part of that animal. Use the meat for food, of course, take the skin and utilize whatever horns bones and organs are useful. We do this when animals are slaughtered commercially.
People say that man is supposed to hunt, and I don't disagree, but do point out that early man and native americans used every single part of a slaughtered animal. Absolutely nothing was wasted, and so should it be.

Thanks for the comment! I will keep the coke/beer idea in my mind in case I do come across venison again. My significant other doesn't hunt for deer because he doesn't like the taste and will only hunt for meat he will eat, but if one of our friends gets a deer I might just ask for some and try your suggestion. Thanks again!
Take care and happy writing,

Hi,
Thanks for the comments! I also found the information you posted on the case study to be very interesting - and most of the hunters I know work for the Department of Corrections, so the study makes a lot of sense. Very interesting!
Thanks again,

I don't hunt... (Reply to this comment)
by murasaki
...myself, but I'm all for it as long as it's licensed. We need to hunt certain types of game, especially deer and rabbits, because their natural predators have retreated away from human areas and the animal populations get out of control without hunting to balance it.
If you ever want to try venison again, soak the meat for 12 hours or so in Coke or beer before you prepare it for a meal. This takes out some of the gamey taste that deer tends to have. My mom used Coke because we never had alcohol in my house growing up; but I've had venison soaked in beer and I prefer that.
Thanks for a great review!

Excellent review... (Reply to this comment)

...I happen to be a hunter myself. I don't hunt very often and I don't hunt for sport. I hunt for food! Cheap food! However, I wanted to mention that hunting is good and promotes healthy psychological development in males. Some case studies we read in my psychology class indicated a strong correlation between crime and hunting. Hunters tend to be less likely to commit a crime where as a male who doesn't hunt is more likely to commit a crime. Another case study showed that juvenile crime offenders could be rehabilitated by having an adult male take them hunting! Seems much better and cheaper than jailtime...So hunting is good for society! You don't believe me? Pick up a psych book and study the subject!
With that said I must mention one of my favorite quotations concerning meat...
"Save a cow, eat a vegetarian!" heheheh -J
