Don't forget to get those updates!

The Bottom Line Antivirus software is useless unless you can remember to update it at least once a month.

McAfee -- Norton -- PcCillin

From my experience, all anti-virus softares are just about equal. The reason that I say this is that they are all pretty effective at catching the viruses, programed in similar fashion, etc.

The one thing that matters most about antivirus software is that they are useless unless they are updated at least monthly. Most manufacturers have updates on a weekly, or biweekly. Usually I recommend updating once a month or if you hear something in the news about a virus.

Not updating the anti-virus program makes it virtually useless. Not allowing your antivirus program to run in the backround makes it useless as well.

Don't bother with the "suites" like "System Works" or "Internet Security". You may have to do a custom install, but only install the antivirus sofware.

The only virus program that updates automatically or reminds you to update is norton. After a 6-month period though, you have to pay $20 a year subscription fee. McAfee on the other hand has it's DAT (Updates) files available for free on their website to download and install. If you use the update button in the actual program, it may ask for subscription fee.
