World Market Mocha Java coffee

Written: Nov 22 '06
Pros:Smooth, no bitterness or sharp tastes to it, very pleasing.
Cons:Very bland
The Bottom Line: A pretty disappointing coffee.

This is another coffee from World Market’s. World Markets have several average and above average coffee beans available. This is their version of a Mocha Java Roast.
The first thing I thought of when I first saw Mocha on a bag of coffee beans I immediately thought chocolate. I don’t know why but this is not a chocolate flavored bean if that is what you thought also. Rather it is a A traditional blend of Yemen Mocha and Java Arabica coffees consisting of one part Yemen Mocha to two parts Java Arabica.” (source: Google.com definitions) Hence the name Mocha Java.

How I did the tasting
The beans used were whole beans. I brewed a batch in my French coffee press. The water was just below boiling and the ground beans sat in the water for 4 minutes before the plunger was pressed. The grind is a course grind. I also use bottled water because my tap water tastes putrid.

The taste out of my coffee press
Aroma
The aroma was a bit disappointing, there really wasn’t much there. And where there’s no aroma there is….
Taste/Flavor
…no taste. It is a very mild coffee with nothing that stands out. Even Puckmugger would approve of flavoring this coffee.
Body
I found that there really wasn’t much body to it. It didn’t coat the tongue like other coffees have.
Acidity
There is no brightness to the brew. It is pretty close to neutral. And there is no alkaline qualities other.
The roast
The color of the beans remind me of chocolate. So it seems like a medium roast to me.

The bean
The sizes of the beans ranged from 3/8 of an inch to 9/16 an inch.
The taste was unpleasant. Although not acidic or bitter, it had a very strong earthy taste to it. Nothing special here if you like to munch on coffee beans, unless you like the taste of dirt.

Price
It is 7.99 for 12 ounces of coffee.

Where to get it.
Cost Plus: World Market.
There are 286 stores in 35 states, including the one I go to at the Ontario Mills, Ontario Ca.

While you can buy their coffee makers (and a nice French press from Bodum), you cannot buy their coffee online.

The word
I won’t buy this particular coffee again. It was bland and lacked character. Nothing remarkable and definitely the most disappointing coffee I have tried from them. I have found that many of World Market’s coffee is fairly mild but this one just did not have any redeeming qualities. It was a vanilla/bland coffee.

My other coffee reviews.
Kauai Peaberry Roast
Starbucks Kenya Coffee
Starbucks House Blend
World Markets Italian Roast
World Market Sumatra Medium Roast
