Pop Disaster Tour:/Tweeter Center- Mansfield, MA. June 2nd, 2002.Aug 25 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line HOLY HELL. What a blast! I have been a fan of Green Day a good eight years now. They are one of my all time favorite bands, and the thought of seeing them live was like a dream come true, and indeed, it was. Ever since I purchased the tickets, the waiting really irked my nerves, but I knew it would all come in good time. The only thing I wasn't anticipating seeing was Saves the Day and Blink 182. I arrived around four and waited a mere hour and a half until the gates opened and immediately at the sound of noise went to a smaller stage where a little band called Simple Plan were playing. I had never heard of them before, but I went down there anyway. I ended up being in front and crushed against barricades as the crowd got hectic behind me and the band members' spit all over me. It was quite the experience. They were all right. They're a very pop-punk band, similar to New Found Glory but a little bit more to my liking. A song that stuck with me from their performance was a tune called "Addicted" in which their vocalist says "I'm addic... I'm addicted to you." They've got a cute sense of humor. They also had a lot of interaction with the crowd while playing, and their sound was extremely well. They were very open to the audience after the show was done and weren't uptight about signing anything. They were extremely nice people and you could just tell they were in it solely for the music and not the fame. They are a bunch of laidback guys who deserve a chance to shine. I recommend checking them out. At least a 4/5 on performance. After I saw them, I went to look at the merchandise they had there. They had tons upon tons of hoodies and tee-shirts for Green Day and Blink 182. They literally had boxes upon boxes of the same types of tee's for Green/Blink. Saves the Day, aswell as Simple Plan merchandise, was limited. I'm not sure if they sold Green Day or Blink albums, but Simple Plan were selling them. Blink 182 also had cute little thongs which I later saw two overweight kids running around in. Maybe some merchandise should not be marketed? I ended up missing a good portion of Save The Day's performance because of all of the gazing I did at the merch. tables. Apparently, I heard there wasn't much to see anyway. The seats I had were pretty good. They weren't too far back and sadly not too close, but I was still content to be there and be able to hear the music and enjoy the songs they belted out. I didn't particularly enjoy Blink 182's performance other than the special effects that any band who would headline a tour would get. They had a lot of pyro and lighting effects, but their sound was very horrible. Their singer's voice blurred in with the music too much, and the bassist was amplified more than everything. It wasn't equalized at all. They didn't make effort to interact with the crowd. All they did was shout out a bunch of sick jokes regarding puberty that only thirteen year olds would laugh at. I'm unsure of the setlist, but they played all of their radio singles. They also played "Dammit" and "Carousel" from their album Dude Ranch. Their singer had a spotlight acoustic on one song, and the drummer had a big solo while his stage was brought into the air and spinned around for a while. I think the lighting effects/pyro and the drum solo were the highlight of their act. I give their performance a 2/5. GREEN DAY!!! In a totally unbiased opinion, this was one of the best performances I have ever seen in my entire life! Everything was right. The sound was perfect. Nothing blurred against anything. Everything was in tact. They didn't have anything fancy at all except for glitter and tissue paper flying out of some vents with "Green Day" printed on them. But their sound was remarkable. Everything was totally equalized, and you could hear everything so clearly. There were no faults whatsoever in their sounds, and they were funny as hell. Billie was a real entertainer to the crowd. I think that he loves interacting with fans. He tried to get a "Yankees Suck" chant going on which was pretty cool, and he would often talk to the crowd in between songs, which is more than I can say for Blink 182. I'm not sure how anyone could not get into them while they were pouring their energy into the show. I never sing at shows, I never dance at shows, and I never groove at shows- but they created such a feel of something I had never felt before while viewing a live band. It could've been the fact that they were my favorite and I was overwhelmed with happiness, or it could've been the fact that they were so damn stellar that it made me want to dance. Nonetheless, I had such a blast. This is not a correct order, but these were the songs performed on this wonderful night. 1. Maria- The opening song that riled the crowd into a frenzy.. or me, anyway. Nah, the fans went wild. Everyone around me was screaming and jumping- and this was to a song so damn new to recognition as it was just previously released on their current album at the time, International Superhits 2. Longview- Before they played this hit, which was their first single, the audience was graced with the visual pleasures of seeing Billie Joe slip his hand down his pants, moaning aloud. This song reflects about masturbation, and one would assume that's why he did it.. of course, there would be no complaints if it were just plainly done out of the blue, either! 3. Welcome to Paradise- One hell of a performance! I could feel the sweat that Tre was working up as he beat that kit to hell! Paradise in Mansfield? Definitely! 4. Hitchin a Ride- This gave me a lift to happy hour! It's very cool to see a band perform your favorite songs, if not all of them, some will surely do. They put a lot into this song, especially after the second chorus calmed down and they went into that smashing little bridge-type part. Man, they made the crowd go insane. 5. 2,000 Light Years Away- I thought this was probably a peak of the show for me. It's very amazing to know that so many years after they've written this song, they will still perform it, knowing they have fans who aren't just of the previously released stuff. When Billie asked the crowd, "How many of you are into old-school Green Day?!" I was only hoping that they'd play something like this, and surely, they did. They made my day. It sounds so much more hypnotizing live. 6. Basketcase- Yeah, Billie! The fans have all the time in the world for you! I think that this is one of Green Day's most comercially successful songs. It was something a little different for the time that it was released back in '94, and they can still play it with that much damn energy. It's really mind blowing. 7. Shout (that really old song they play on commercials for cleaning detergent)- You know you make me wanna... SHOUT! That was really funny. It was unexpected to see, but what do you expect from Green Day but the unexpected? That's definitely a good reason to go to their shows- you simply don't know what to expect from them... It could be anything at all. It's kind of a "you gotta experience this yourself" thing. They really make me want to groove, though. 8. Knowledge (Operation Ivy cover)- This song kind of bothered me because they took three kids out from the audience to play each of their instruments and take over some of the song and the kid playing Billie's guitar got to keep it. Damn it, I wanted it! Isn't it cool how a band like that will do something so bizarre? I simply adore it. 9. She- Well, they completely made my night by playing my ultimate favorite song ever by them! It's so much more cool to hear live. I love Mike's little bass line, and since everything was equalized.. ahh... It sounds exactly like the album. 10. Brain Stew- This had the little crust-punk feel to it because of distortion, but the pick scrapes drew me over the edge. I really liked it, but it was kind of hard to get into this song live... I guess that's why they have the following song to back it up! 11. Jaded- This is definitely one of Green Day's most energetic, upbeat, and fast songs. It's really great to see live because it gives off so much energy, as do they. During this song Billie was running along top of the speakers as he was singing. 12. King for a Day- This was so hilarious. There are horns featured in this song, which is why I'd figured that they'd never play something like this live... but they had these people dressed up in costumes like school mascots come out and play on the horns. It was such a trip. I love the song, too. Really catchy and funny. 13. Waiting- Thinking about it now, as I sang this song with Billie, I meant every word that I said. "I've been waiting a long time for this moment to come I'm destined for anything at all." "Well I'm so much closer than I have ever known, wake up." "Better thank your lucky stars." They held so much control over me that night. It was so pulsing and raw. It was such a damn forceful evening. 14. Minority- This was just entertaining to see because they were jumping around the stage and all while they were playing it. This is one of their more recent hits, the first single from their last "official" album at the time (that's referring to the one with newest songs on it) called Warning. It's very cool to see them performing songs from each album they created. 15. When I Come Around- They performed this song, and then what I saw after they played this other hit of theirs was so beautiful.. it completely was. Tre knocks over his drums, Mike lights his bass on fire and tosses it to the side, and Billie crouches over near an amplifier expressing such lovely feedback for a good solid four minutes. The lights dim, Billie grabs another guitar to finish the show that could have not came to a better conclusion. 16. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)- He put so much passion into this song, and you could absolutely FEEL it. I think that's the most powerful feeling I have ever felt at a concert. I had more than the time of my life. I truly mean it when I say that June 2nd was the happiest day of my whole entire life. How a band can have that much control on you... just sets me into such a weird state of mind. Billie totally gave all he had into the song. Green Day gave all they had into the entire performance. They are well worth money and time to go see. They are well damn worth all of the money and time that exists. Definitely a 5/5. |
