Work-Study in High School

Aug 26 '02

The Bottom Line Give it a shot, its a great experience and it will help you out in your college years.

Work-studies like internships are a very important part of your college and high school life, they should go hand in hand.
I am a senior in college and have already had two internships in college and two work-study programs in high school.
This article will be about high school work-studies.
Getting a work-study program in high school is very important because it helps the student get a grasp of the real working world. You get to see before you choose a college if the field you are considering is what you want to do. It lets you get a glimpse way before anyone else. By doing one you have the upper hand in your career and a great way to start off your resume.
Work-studies should be done your junior or senior year. You should start planning the end of the year before you plan to start. I got both of my work-studies through my guidance counselor. I just told him I was interested in some work-study programs and he was happy to help. I didn’t go to a large or even middle size high school it was very small ( 70 in each class). So it does not matter on the size of your school. Big companies will higher from all schools not just large city schools. My two work-studies were with IBM and Cablevision.
Work-studies are usually after school but can be during school if they can replace a class or two. They can consist of anything and everything; you could be working in an office or outside. While working you will be considered like an intern. What you will be doing is basic clerical stuff, but it could consist of some great learn experiences along the way. Always ask questions and never let yourself have anything not to do, always ask if there is more to help with. It shows that you’re a hard worker and that you really want to help out.
Most importantly if your unhappy about something or hate what you are doing, talk to someone they should always be able to help you, If that doesn’t work talk to someone else and keep on talking. Sometimes companies forget that they are hosting you and you are doing them the favor by picking up some work for next to nothing or free. Always keep your guidance counselor informed of what is going on and of any problems you have. They are there for you and should stick by you, unless of course you did something you weren’t supposed to. =)
Be nice and friendly even if it’s not something you want to do, most of the time it won’t be. But remember that you are important; by doing the small things you are letting others move on to more important things. You do count!!
Hopefully if everything works out the right way you will know if the work-study you did is something you want to go to college to learn more about and get a job in. Once your work-study is over remember to get in contact with the people you worked for. Let them know what college you are going to and what you’re planning to major in. If you did a great job and they liked you, you might be able to get an internship in college through them or even a job!
I hope this helps feel free to ask any question in the comments section, I will be happy to answer and discuss anything you want.
Good luck in the next upcoming years!
Thanks =)
