Recent info on Vik's (Reply to this comment)
by MaxWebster
They must have recently changed the recipe for the samosas. Now I don't like them as well.
The parking lot has been divided in half, with the spots closest to Vik's all reserved for other businesses. You'll need to park on the far side of the fence.
They change the specials every day during the week. The specials tend to be the same each weekend. My favourite is the vegetable kathi.

Great review! (Reply to this comment)
by AEOakley
Both of my parents as well as my younger brother are Cal graduates, so when we lived in San Jose we were always going up there for games, and then later, to visit my brother in school. One place we loved to go to for breakfast was Fat Apples. It has been years since I've been to Berkeley -- is Fat Apples it still around?

Hey thanks for your kind remarks. I do love Berkeley, and even though I may never live there again, I think it will always be home in a sense. It really is like no other place on earth. But it takes living there to really get a sense of the place. My husband visited me there on the weekends for years before we married. He never fully appreciated it until he lived there after we married. Glad you liked this piece.

Tom, funny you should mention Ruth R. One of my upcoming book reviews is for a very old cookbook that has been reprinted as part of a series and she's the series editor. Love the book, but hate what she did to Gourmet magazine.
Thanks for your comment.

Absolutely wonderful work! (Reply to this comment)
by Epicure
This really is an above-and-beyond review! I enjoyed it tremendously as a former Berkeley resident myself. I agree that Berkeley is a fantastic place to find budget treats. I miss the Bowl and the farmer's markets. One of my favorite places to dine was a Korean restaurant on the North Side, right across the street from campus (can't remember the name). I don't even know if it exists anymore, but I can still find my way there. I use to stop by Skylar's Ice Cream Cafe afterwards, but I know that has since closed - the best place to enjoy a relaxing Sunday morning read. It's been years since my last trip to Berkeley. I really must find time to revisit my old stomping grounds. Your beautifully written piece has inspired me.

Having just plowed through Ruth Reichl's books about living in Berkeley, among other things, I was most interested to find your review here. Well done! Tom Barnes

Glad to be of service! I hope you do hop on BART to visit Berkeley. My next installment of this series may be a while in coming. (You can see how long they are.) But stay tuned for more. Thanks for leaving a comment.

I know the Smokehouse. Are you *sure* it's in Berkeley? The Berkeley/Oakland border gets all wonky when you get near Alcatraz. But I'm pretty sure this one's in Oakland. You meant south of campus, right?
Meat eaters can get their fix at Vik's, too. And the Thai brunch as well. Thanks for your comment!

Hey! For meat eaters on a budget... (Reply to this comment)

...you can't pass up The Smoke House on Telegraph a good way west of the campus, burgers the way they oughta be from before In 'n Out was a concept; I remember going there as a kid back in the early sixties, and went back three years ago, and it's still a funky shack, still open 'til 2 a.m., and still the best damn burgers anywhere.
Anywhere. Good post.
cheers,

This could easily have been 5 different reviews. Nice of you to pack 'em together so I just have one thing to print out before I hop on the BART.
Really well done, as always.
