The Bottom Line In my experience, they are reliable and offer a high grade of overall performance - very good value for money.
I got myself a Dell about a couple of years ago, and I'm very happy with it for a variety of reasons. I've tried to include as much detail as possible in the examples below: #1 - Extremely user-friendly setup, upgrades and maintenance: Getting a Dell to work out of the box is probably a process that they repeatedly get reviewed by a bunch of not-so-bright test users. Getting the hardware out of the box and having it set up and getting online with the free AOL membership that it came with was a process that probably took 30 minutes tops - and this includes heaving the monitor onto the desk and making sure that the wires weren't too tangled behind. Connections were color-coordinated, the manual had a lot of illustrations, and the OS was ready to run upon bootup. All in all, minimal pain and maximum satisfaction! A few months ago, when I tried to get under its hood for a peek at its innards, I found that they had not only kept the connector tangle inside at the very bare minimum, but it was also as user-friendly on the inside as it was on the outside. The outer shell is designed to come apart without screws, and the components and bays were designed for easy access. #2 - Customer care: I've heard horror stories about users trying to reach Dell's customer service. I've had two opportunities so far to test this out, and at both instances, I've had almost no trouble at all. The first time was when I had to reach their software support folks because of a possible worm infection. I called late in the night, and had a tech on the line in about 20 minutes. The tech seemed friendly, and followed up almost immediately with the required fix and some research from public sites about the worm infection that I had mentioned to him about. Also, he walked me through a complete OS re-installation, and I was very impressed with the ease of how they had set up things on the restore CD et al. Usually, OS reinstallations meant that all the programs had to be reinstalled and the like, but I was up and running after just reinstalling the OS - I didn't have to reinstall any of the programs that I had loaded. Maybe this is more of an OS thing, though. #3 - System upgrades: I ordered a hard disk from Dell recently, and after the free shipping offer and a discount, the price I paid was better than the best deal that I was getting from local electronics' outlet stores. #4 - Performance: A friend - one with various system-level certifications, remarked that he was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the system, given it specifications, and proceeded to use an application that benchmarked my system against others of the same and higher caliber. I was impressed with the results. All in all, about two years later - I don't feel the need to go with another computer company or the need to buy a new computer. Dell's been great, both as a product and as after-sales service, and I think I'll be sticking with them! |
