At 80,000 miles, purchased in August 2002, this 2003 Jetta 5 speed manual still goes with no problems. I average a typical 44 mpg. I really wouldn't place much credence in claims above that.
The engine goes strong, but the check engine light comes on in the rain and they reset it at the 10K oil changes. No sign of operational impact from driving with it on.
The first problem I had with the car, the big springs under the front seats fall apart, still exists. I live without them. They replaced the seats once because of this.
The plastic center armrest cover hinge broke again after being replaced. I'll live with it until about 100K when I plan to buy any old hinge at Lowes and screw it on myself. By that time I will have decided how to do it.
What I'm saying is that its a typical VW with trim not holding up but the mechanics are just fine.
I do about 37 miles to work on interstate in Fla. with minor city driving. Acceleration is great, even approaching the top of the Skyway bridge at 85 mph. [Theoretically, of course, wink - wink]. I still think its a comfortable car, but swear I think its more comfortable with only 1 occupant.
Went from Tampa to TN on one tank. Sip liquids only when needed to avoid stops.
Next car- I' love plug-in diesel hybrid but gas would do. I wouldnt pay extra for diesel unless as I you are paranoid about a shortage of gasoline at some time in the future.
Some $15 k gas sippers seem to be a better deal than the $22k+ VW diesel for heavy commute, but the 4 cyl gas sippers won't have the power of the diesel.
