| verloren_hoop's Full Review: Veet Comfort Waxing Kit |
Behold, the great lengths your Epinions Reviewer goes to just to report accurate information to you, the reader!
I first tried out the Veet Comfort Waxing Kit when I was absolutely sick and tired of shaving. In case you don't know, 'waxing' is a catchy term that actually means 'using wax to rip your hairs out by the root.' Try waxing if:
- you have a lot of unwanted body hair
- the hair is reaching world-record lengths because you're sick of shaving
- you don't mind some pain
The Product
The kit comes with twelve waxing strips, a spray bottle of comfort waxing spray, and a perfect finish wipe.
The Waxing Strips
The twelve waxing strips come stuck together, with the wax already on them. They're made of a Tyvek-like material. To separate two waxing strips, you simply rub the strips between your hands to soften the wax, and peel apart. This is nice because you don't have to worry about how much wax to use, and there's no spreading involved. And, yes, I heard your cry of dismay when I said that there are only twelve waxing strips. However, each waxing strip can be used four times, so it's like getting 48 of them. Ingredients: Triethylene Glycol Rosinate, Glyceryl Rosinate, Silica, Fragrance, Isopropyl Myristate, Bha, Green 6, Mentha Piperita Leaf Extract.
The Comfort Waxing Spray
This is brilliant. It's simple - just a menthol/camphor spray. However, it numbs your legs just enough that the waxing isn't nearly as painful as it could be! Ingredients: Ethyl Alcohol, Water (Eau), Menthol, Camphor
The Perfect Finish Wipe
This is a cloth that is soaked in soothing mineral oil. It cools your skin after waxing and wipes away leftover wax. Ingredients: Mineral Oil, Hexyldecyl Stearate, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Isohexadecane, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropylparaben, Butylparaben, Bisabolol, Bha, Green 6, Mentha Piperita Leaf Extract.
How you use it
The first step is to read the directions! There's all sorts of useful information in there to help you out.
It's debatable whether you want to wax before or after showing. If you wax right before showering (a day after your last shower) you'll pull off a lot of dead skin, and it might not be as effective. It might hurt a little less. However, make sure you use only mild soap when you shower afterwards. If you wax right after showering, you'll pull off newer skin cells (since you've just washed the really old ones off.) Your skin will probably be a little more sensitive afterwards, but waxing might be more effective. (I say 'might' because I'm not sure if my experience in this regard will hold true for your skin!) I would recommend in-between - don't wax right after showering, nor right before.
Similarly, I recommend waxing when your hair is about 3-4 mm long. Veet works for this length of hair, and it's long enough that you can clearly see what areas are done and which still need waxing.
Spray your legs/bikini area/underarms with the comfort waxing spray. TIP: If you want it to dry faster, rub it in with your hands or a cloth, and then wash your hands. For less mess and bother, just spray it on and wait. Make sure that your legs are completely dry before waxing. You'll feel the alcohol in the spray cooling your legs.
Take two strips (they'll be stuck together) and rub them between your hands, then pull apart. TIP: Put the one you're not using somewhere far away, so that you don't sit on it like I did. Place the strip on your leg. Smooth it down a few times, quickly, in the direction of the hair growth (for most of your legs, that'll be down, toward your foot.) Grab the bottom end of the strip, brace yourself, and quickly, with one motion, pull off the strip opposite the direction of the hair growth. Keep your hand as close to your leg as possible while pulling the strip off. If you pull it up, away from your leg, it won't work. After ripping it off, feel free to say ouch. When you've used those two strips, stick them back together. Once you run out of strips, you can pick up your used ones, rub them vigorously between your hands again, and peel them back apart to use again. You can use the strips about four times if your hair isn't very long, but the longer your hair is, the less effective re-use will be.
For your legs, it's pretty easy. Just pay attention on your thighs and the back of your legs, because the hair might not grow in the same direction. For your bikini area, the directions recommend cutting the strips smaller. This will take a little more time, but it's easier to do. I don't usually bother, unless I'm feeling picky. For your underarms, DON'T. DO NOT WAX YOUR UNDERARMS UNLESS YOU ARE MASOCHISTIC. This isn't specific to this product, but it still holds true - underarm waxing is incredibly painful and difficult. If you're like me, each hair goes in its own direction. If you really want to wax your underarms, use this kit. However, I recommend shaving or dilapitories for your underarms. Also, DO NOT use this on sensitive areas - genitals or face. Buy a kit specifically for those areas.
Once you're done waxing, pull out that Perfect Finish Wipe. Rub it generously all over the area you waxed. Even if your skin doesn't feel sticky, the wipe cleans away tiny traces of wax to make you deliciously smooth. Also, it further soothes your skin.
The Final Breakdown
Waxing is painful. If you hate pain, this is not for you. However, if you want to wax, this is the perfect kit. It's far less painful and messy than other waxes, and it's simple enough that you really can do it yourself. I've used this product at least three times, and I've been satisfied each time. It's reasonably priced (I bought it on sale the last time for 5.00, it's usually 7.99-ish) Also, it's not loud or batter-operated like electric razors. It doesn't get dull, and if you don't use all the strips at once, you can keep them for later.
