The Bottom Line Lots of choices. Lots of line-ups!

Brunch seems to be Angelenos' favorite meal of the week. I was amazed when I moved here to find line-up's from 9:00am to 1:00pm at various brunch places here. So, have wheels, will travel:

West Los Angeles
Ronnie's (Culver Blvd)
The Westside's best kept secret is this chic little diner on Culver Blvd near Hwy 90. The menu is fabulous as part of it was designed by a trainer so there are numerous healthy alteratives on the brunch menu. Service is its weak point as they seem to go through a steady rotation of staff. Super omelettes, pancakes, and breakfast burritos.

Fifties Diner (Lincoln Blvd)
Authentic retro-diner on Lincoln has your classic brunch menu that Ruby's also simulates. Expect line-ups out the door all morning. Small cramped tables but good food attractively priced. So-so service of the 'kiss my grits' variety. (KCRW discount here!)

Crest House (Washington Blvd)
Another retro diner run by a Greek owner. The Greek influence shows on some of the menu items but they have the diner basics - good coffee, wide breakfast choices and fast brusque service.

South Bay
Good Stuff (multiple locations)
There are Good Stuff restaurants in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. The menu is broad, serving breakfast all day long. However, line-ups start early. Service is also haphazard as these are popular family restaurants. My favorite is the pumpkin spice pancakes. Coffee is terrible, though - tastes like it was brewed from hemp! Great motto though, "When you eat, eat good stuff!"

Ocean View Cafe
Off Highland in Manhattan Beach is a wonderful Mediterranean style cafe that serves a great brunch menu. A little pricey, there are some items here that I've not seen before like a brie/almond/apple plate, my fave Mediterranean breakfast croissant (omelette and olives and feta cheese) as well as healthy smoothies and other sandwich style breakfasts. With good weather, expect a line-up but enjoy the ocean view!

Marina del Rey
Jerry's Deli
With locations in Beverly Hills and Marina del Rey, Jerry's grabs some of the brunch business with its all-day menu. Their breakfast menu is extensive and expensive. Expect line-ups and poor service.

Nichols
Located in the Marina Marketplace, Nichols recently went through an expensive upgrade to look more of a day-restaurant rather than the night-time brass/wood look they previously had. A good breakfast menu with mixed hit & miss service, Nichols has a couple healthy low-fat items that also feature poached fish. The crowd seems to be much more senior citizen here.

Main Street Cafe (El Segundo)
El Segundo is a hidden treasure of a city and on their Main Street is an odd little diner. Run by Greek owners - again with a heavy Greek selection on their menu, their breakfasts are inexpensive. Service is so-so. Ambiance is a little lacking - the inside of the restaurant seems to have a permanent smell of disinfectants.
