Honeybaked.com: Large Meals, Precooked and Ready to Serve
Nov 29, 2006
Food preparation can be tiring, time consuming work and this is especially true during the Holiday season. Most years, my family and I prepare large amounts of food and partake in an eating frenzy on Thanksgiving, on Christmas, and sometimes on other days as well. But this Thanksgiving was a little different. Life was more hectic than usual so I decided it was time to break with tradition and let someone else perform the task of making all of the food needed for our holiday feast. The place I turned was the internet and the web site I utilized was Honeybaked.com, the on- line store for the Honey Baked Ham Company/Restaurant.
What Does This Service Offer?
Honeybaked.com offers items for sale such as:
Meats- Ham is at the forefront, but this store offers other prepared meats, too, like turkey, beef tenderloin, prime rib, beef Wellington, pork roast, and more.
Side Dishes/Appetizers- To add to a meal or to get one started, customers can select from mixed vegetables, cinnamon apples, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, broccoli rice casserole, baked brie, hambone soup mix, etc.
Desserts- End your meal in style by selecting among choices like cheesecake, carrot cake, pecan pie, vanilla bean cake, etc.
Gift Baskets- An assortment of baskets for different occasions can be found here, packed with regular food and dessert goodies.
In addition to the above items, Honey Baked Ham also offers gift certificates, business gift ideas, and gift clubs (an ongoing gift certificate). And besides the items available to buy, Honeybaked.com also has a selection of recipes accessible from the main page.
Payment Methods/Shipping Charges:
Honey Baked Ham accepts MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express for payment. This on- line store offers three different shipping levels: Standard (5 to 6 business days), Express (2 to 4 business days) and Rush (1 to 2 business days). Standard shipping is only offered on Friday and Saturday; Express shipping adds Wednesday to the list; and Rush is available very day except Sunday.
If you create an account with Honey Baked Ham On- Line, you can check the status of your order whenever you like. If you have general questions about the site or the service, you must call 800-367-7720 between the hours of 8am and 6pm Monday through Friday or 10am to 6pm on Saturday (all times are Eastern) or send an e-mail message using the Contact Us link.
Honey Baked Ham is a chain restaurant operation that also offers a web service for people who prefer to let someone else do the work and have the food shipped right to their door. I have eaten food from Honey baked Ham before but it was food that someone else had ordered. This past Thanksgiving marked the first time I have ever ordered food for consumption at home. With the chaos going on in my house at the time, it seemed like a good idea. Following the birth of a new baby, we had no desire to cook food or partake in any other holiday festivities. We needed a break, but we also wanted to eat at home, like we do for a traditional Thanksgiving. Honeybaked.com fulfilled our wishes and gave us exactly what we wanted.
With Honeybaked.com, customers can order food items separately and combine sides and desserts into a meal. There are a few small dinners and it is also common to find package offers and other promotions. When I placed my order, there was a special offer that included four side dishes at a lower price than usual provided I purchase a ham or a turkey. This was exactly what I wanted. In fact, it was this special offer that caught my attention and convinced me to give Honeybaked.com a try. Like I said, I had eaten honey Baked Ham food in the past but I had never ordered from them myself until this experience.
When food arrives from Honeybaked.com, the large pieces of meat will be partially frozen. This is because Honey Baked Ham wants to make sure its foods are as fresh as possible and since a large piece of meat has the potential to spoil, it is precooked and then frozen completely. It is shipped frozen, so when it reaches your home, it will be partially thawed. You will have to give it time to thaw completely before serving. It can be refrigerated and reserved at later dates but consumers need to keep in mind that once they are thawed, the ham is designed to last about 7 to 10 days and the turkey for 5 to 7 days. The flavor will start to deteriorate after that. With the sides, they will likely still be a little cold (depending on how far you live from a shipping center) when they arrive but not frozen. These side dishes can be quickly heated and served by placing them in a microwave.
You do not need to have an account established to complete an order with Honey Baked Ham. You can enter your information as you go, including your name and address for the billing and the shipping. There is no box to check to make the shipping address the same as the billing, so you will have to type the same information in again if the food needs to be sent to the same place it is billed. Once you have entered the shipping address, you will have the option of setting up a password. You dont need to do this to complete the order but if you do, Honeybaked.com will save your settings and create an account so you will not have to re-input everything on a future visit.
Honeybaked.com uses UPS for its shipping and the shipping charges are quite high. Even at the standard level, they add quite a bit of money to your order. My $85 order was increased by $17.95 using standard shipping- an increase of about 20 percent. Using Express and Rush delivery will add even more money with an additional per- unit charge. This is a good deal of money to pay, but on the other hand there was no sales tax and I had the luxury of having to do nothing for Thanksgiving. The food showed up, precooked, ready to warm up and serve. It made Thanksgiving much simpler than usual.
Honeybaked.com is a straight- forward web service without many pages to browse or many items to purchase. There is nothing but food for sale and as many people know, Honey Baked Ham only offers a limited selection of food items. Customers shouldnt come to the on- line store looking for a smorgasbord of eating options. There are only a few choices- just like in the Honey Baked Ham restaurants.
Ordering is simple with this service but you need to be careful with your timing. Like I stated above, the shipping methods are restrictive and some of them are good only for shipment on a specific day. Also, you need to make sure you order in plenty of time if you want to minimize the shipping costs. Standard shipping offers a reasonable deal but it takes up to seven working days to be delivered and delivery is only offered on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. This is why customers must place their order well ahead of schedule. It is better to get the food early (it can be refrigerated until you need it) than have it arrive late and ruin your festivities. I received my order several days before Thanksgiving because I didnt want to take a chance and have the food not arrive in time for the holiday.
Overall, Honeybaked.com is a good web service for ordering large meals. It is a simple site to use and its a great idea for people who want something good to eat but dont have the time or patience to prepare the food. The site could be made better with a larger selection and lower shipping charges. But this is still a good place to shop for meals. It provides a nice, simple, trouble- free way to enjoy a holiday meal at home without having to endure the often grueling, thankless task of food preparation.
