Nice Selection (Reply to this comment)

I would have included "How to Marry a Millionaire" over a couple of the light hearted ones. The rest are great. "Don't Bother to Knock" is a gem that still holds up well today.

How rude. Great choices for Miss Jean. I think NIAGRA is my favorite, although there are several movies that were great because she was in them I wonder how much Hollywood did and how much was a conscious self-image building, that she promoted. I suspect it was more of a willing collusion than we think.
But she can't answer those questions, sadly. It would have been interesting to see her as an older actress. It is our loss. Jude

She's more curvy than the anorexic actresses of today, for sure! ;-)

Thanks, Alex! Yes, I've mentioned how much I liked her in AP, but this was a list of her movies where she's a lead actress. Don't Bother shows a different side of her than sexpot so I went for that instead. AP definitely should be seen.

Interesting list. I think I would have put in THE ASPHALT JUNGLE instead of one of the others. It is a small roll, her first, as you know, but she holds the screen with one of the finest actors living at the time: Louis Calhern. On your list, another Huston film, I think is her best: THE MISFITS. Miller crafted it very close to her personality, and their is a rawness and innocence which comes through in her performance that is very genuine and courageous.
Well done.

in Hollywood today that exudes the glamour, sensuality and vulnerability that Marilyn did. Not even close! Did you hear about Liz Hurley's comment "If I were as fat as Marilyn was, I'd kill myself"? But hey, who the hell cares what Hurley says anyway? I guess I do because it bugged the hell outta me when I heard it LOL.
Anyway, great review. I love SOME LIKE IT HOT and RIVER OF NO RETURN.
Take care

I love the idea for this list as well as its execution...
It also makes me realize just how few Monroe films I've seen... Perhaps its time to play catch-up...

I've always appreciated Norma Jean---Seven Year Itch and Some Like it Hot---are cinematic and cultural classics---and thanks for including Bus Stop and River of no Return---both personal favorites of mine.

It's pretty different for her, but that's what makes it so interesting. I don't always listen to critics either. :-)

Glad you asked about those great movies from 1950. I've seen Asphalt Jungle where she was incredible, but neither it or All About Eve were her movies. I do also highly recommend them, although most have seen them. The ones I included paint a fuller picture of her progress.

Of those you list, Niagara and The Misfits are my favorites. I think I've seen everything else except Don't Bother to Knock which does sound interesting although Leonard Maltin in my handy-dandy Movie & Video Guide only gives it two-and-a-half stars (he's frequently off, however, so I'll be on the lookout for it).

but what about... (Reply to this comment)
by lemon_lime
great list jan! i'm a big fan myself, and i find her life quite interesting too (especially the fact that she seemed to suffer from anxiety disorder of some kind, which is the exact opposite image which she projects to the world)
but i gotta ask, what about 'all about eve'? and 'the asphalt jungle'? just didn't like 'em, or was it because she wasn't the lead role in the films? and i'm sooo glad you mentioned 'the misfits' a lot of people haven't seen this film. maybe now, they'll go look for it!
one can hope, right?
take care,
chad.
