A few suggestions, if you would be so good. (Reply to this comment)

My good man, you have made some good choices, and shown me a decent band in young genesis. However, how you can not give a special mention to the true god of emotional guitar solos astounds me... to the point where I wonder if you actually listen to music. The single most emotionally charged solo the world has ever seen is by a man named Dave Gilmour who joined Pink Floyd a year or so after lead singer Syd Barrett decided he liked the taste of liquid acid. Make no mistake about it, your compiled list is good, and indeed worthy of merit but you appear to of compiled your list from songs you like, and generally the solos from songs you like are better because the rest of the song is good. The ultimate guitar solo can be found in a song, that while good, is not traditionally what you would expect. Its about a fellow how has overdosed on drugs and needs brought round. The lyrics and vocal line, while powerfull in their own way aren't catchy and the song is not near my top fifty list. The solo however, is easily the single best work of art from a guitar player since the birth of the basic instrument with the old lute some time in the Renaisance. At the P*U*L*S*E* concert in 1994 at Earls Court as a second encore after an hour and a half concert the green, almost liturgical lasers pointed out to the sky like some sign to god that something truley magnificent was about to take place, and then came the first resounding Bminor Chord. The song in question is Comfortably Numb, the solo is a true work of almost mozart like perfection. The studio version while good, is not quite as special as the live version. I would reccomend either to anyone but the true mastery is found on the live album. I would ask you to listen to it and ammend ur list, please.

Well... Clapton I left off because I couldn't pin down a specific song I was particularly attached to, but further listening is required... Black Dog, well, I guess I had to forget something...
Thanks for reading, definitely one for a few drinks and long discussions...

He's right about Clapton and Black Dog. Black Dog is in fact one of my personal favorite Zepp tracks...and Clapton. Well, he's in a league of his own...

I love the read and agree with pretty much everybody you included....but how could you leave off

1 - Black Dog by Zep, widely considered one of the most melodic and complete guitar solos ever.

2 - Starship Trooper - Yes, Steve Howe's ultimate moment...

3 - Clapton - maybe White Room....good lord man, a noteable exception to be sure...

okay, I am certain that there are many more to discuss...maybe we need to have beers and think this through....

excellent review
cheers

He is an astonishing guitarist... it's a shame though, none of his solo album seem particularly inspired. Perhaps I should give him another shot.

Thanks for reading!

I'm totally impressed by your mention of Steve Hackett.

You're right, a long section of the second section is Mr Banks on the organ... but most of it is still Stevie...

Thanks for reading!

I haven't heard almost any of these songs! That is a good thing, it gives me some new material to check out. You included the Musical Box! Yayyy! Some of what you may think is guitar on that second solo section might be Tony Banks on a Hammond organ though...
