The 10 Films I Consider to be SuperiorSep 16 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line I know that my list seems a little recent..but hey..i am only 22. These are just the films that i enjoy watching the most. 1. Pulp Fiction- Calling this film the best ever while ignoring some classics such as Citizen Cane, Casablanca, etc., may seem unfair, but I consider it to be the culmination of decades of brilliant cinema smashed together with poetically profane dialogue and top notch performances. 2. Last Temptation of Christ- While it's reputation of being offensive doesn't last due those of us that actually paid attention to the film, it's reputation of being made with passion and fire does continue. While some of the casting is a little odd..this is pure cinematic brilliance showing how much a director(Martin Scorcese) can truely love to tell a story. 3. Titus- Who would have known that a director's first film would show the same talent and creativity as some of the world's most beloved filmmakers. Julie Tamor has made probably the greatest film based on Shakespeare's work, which is greatly helped by Anthony Hopkins giving one of his greatest performances. 4. Bringing Out the Dead- Sorry but Scorcese just had to take up more than one space on my list. This film has everything a true movie lover could want. As far as i am conserned, the filmmaking as well as the acting in this movie are both flawless. 5. Frailty-In his first film as a director, Bill Paxton reminds us what a true horror movie is. It is not tons of gore and fake scares and shaky cameras. It is caring about the characters and feeling the horror through them. The film is stylish, without being over stylized, and nearly everyone involved deserves a nomination of some sort. 6. Wings of Desire- What many fans of the "ok" film City of Angels dont realize is that it was spawned from this Wim Wenders film. Same basic premise with less emphasis on the romance. Beautifully shot and performed. Some scenes practically make you fell you are floating. 7. Hamlet(Kenneth Branagh version)- At 4 hours in length..the film rarely seems tiresome, although it is hard to find the time to watch it all in one sitting. Branagh deserves and award for every hour of this glorious looking film. 8. Manhunter-I know people are going to remember the upcoming remake Red Dragon and forget this classic..but that is just criminal. Before Silence of the Lambs, Michael Mann created what i consider to be the best detective thriller of all time. Great film with an awesome climax....In A Godda Da Vida baby. 9. Bottle Rocket-It took me years to actually rent this film...cause i thought it looked stupid, but i am glad i did. This was the first time we got to see Owen Wilson, as well as his brother Luke. The film is funny and made with more creativity than we are used to seeing. 10. Withnail & I- Thing Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but without special effects and with characters you actually grow to like. The dry humor isn't for everyone, but this intoxified odyssey just feels so genuine. The two leads are outstanding. |
