Great Printer for its value

Written: Jun 25 '01 (Updated Jun 25 '01)
Pros:Inexpensive, Great Quality, Durable, two input connector, Postscript compatible
Cons:Post Script chip is expensive, no network connection (only on 1450 N)
The Bottom Line: Great Printer for its price. Parallel and USB connection, Large paper tray, durable, optional postscript.

I have used HP printer for several years and decided to go for something different. I purchased NEC 1450 six months ago, and it has been a successful buying experience.

NEC has three models in their 14xx series- 1400, 1450, 1450N. 1400 is smaller than 1450 and 1450N due to the size of paper tray (125 VS 500) and only comes with parellel connection and smaller memory while 1450 N comes with network connection and Postscript. I decided to buy 1450 and purchased postscript later on. (which made me regret the decision. I should have bought 1450N from the beginnig).

The design of the printer is pretty neat, but it is not small (comparing to its comptetiors from HP). It has power saving mode, toner usage control function and optional duplex function upon the addition of the second paper tray.

1450 is a 12 pages per minute b-w laser printer. It comes with two input method (parallel and usb). So it is ideal for two computers. The default memory is 4 MB and it can be expanded 16 MB. The priniting quality is crisp and the durability of the toner is excellent. The preprogrammed language is PCL6 ( Postscript level 3 for 1450N) and compatible with HP-laserjet 5 series.

The paper handling mechanism is very good and is made of high quality plastic. The only downside is that it is quite expensive to add something on. For example, I purchased Postcript expansion pack (around $150) with additional 8 MB memory. Considering the fact that the price of 1450N is under $600, it is quite expansive.

Considering the printing quality and the speed, this is a great buy. Although I would recommend 1450N for those who would like to use this printer in a network mode, I would recommend highly for a single or two-computer users who are looking for the entry level high quality printer.
