| macgyver24's Full Review: Quartet gbc CC85 Shredder |
I was a little concerned about putting old documents to the curbside on garbage day. In Toronto, you can recycle just about any paper product in the recycling program. However, this means that all your private papers sit in a recycle box open to the atmosphere and prying eyes. So I thought a shredder would be a good investment. I didn't want to spend a lot, and my shredding needs weren't that intensive, so this little shredder seemed like the right choice. It has an adjustable bracket on the side so it can fit on top of most square garbage cans.
Boy, was I wrong. This thing has no guts. It can only shred 3 sheets at a time, and that's on a good day. I spend more time picking stuck bits of paper out of it than I do shredding documents. The document slot is only 5" wide so you have to fold everything in half to feed it through. You can't run it very long before it "overheats" and shuts itself off for at least a half an hour. I would have expected more from a unit that runs on 110 volt AC power. It does have a reverse switch, which is a good thing because I use the reverse mode a lot. Sometimes I wonder if this thing would work better feeding things through in reverse!
I have learned that shredders are more than just cutting paper into strips. They are business machines that need to be designed to do the job properly. I should have taken the opportunity to test more shredders out in the store where I made my purchase and I encourage you to do the same.
