Pros:Very quiet and free snacks
Cons:Rooms and overall experience do not warrant the $400+ pricetag
The Bottom Line: Not worth the $400 pricetag. If your going to splurge, spend it at the Pebble Beach Lodge instead.
The Inn at Spanish Bay is located on the picturesque Monterey 17-mile drive. The site is extremely quite as it's nestled between the Monterey forest and the coast. They have complimentary valet in addition to self park.
You are welcomed into the lobby into the central and center point of the Inn. The check in desk is on your left, the conierge is on your right, just beyond is a warm (literally) and inviting sitting area. There is always plenty of action happening in the lobby. On the far side is Roy's restaurant and straight through you can see the coastline and the ocean. There is a wood burning fireplace to stay warm when socializing before dinner during the cool fall and winters. Off to the side is Roy's bar (again with a wood burning fireplace) and a nice seating area that is reminiscent of a log cabin. The most popular hangout (on warm days) has got to be the patio adjacent to Roy's and the lobby lounge. There is plenty of seating, service from the bar, a small grassy area for kids to play around, a gorgeous view of the ocean and a view of the 2nd hole on Spanish Bay. On cold evenings, they light up a couple of fires to keep you warm as you watch the sun sets. Ever evening at sunset they have a Spanish Bay tradition of bagpipes.
Also located on site is the Spanish Bay golf course, fitness center with pool and tennis club. There are free shuttles to the Pebble Beach Lodge, the Spa at Pebble Beach and to Spyglass golf course that leave every 30 minutes. Note to golfers there is no driving range at Spanish Bay, just a putting green and a shortgame area. If you need to warm up, you have to take the shuttle to Spyglass. Also as part of the Inn is a row of 1/2 dozen boutique shops.
Now on with the accomodations...
One point to make as a reminder, if you want a king bed, make sure you reserve ahead of time. They didn't specifically ask us at the time of our reservation and we were caught off guard when they said that only twins were available. Fortunately we pleaded that were were celebrating our anniversary and they eventually gave us a room with a king bed. Other than this, the service was impeccable
I would consider the rooms are on the small side. As you walk in the bathroom and vanity is on your left and the room is laid out in front. There is a small desk, 2 very comfortable arm chairs facing a fake fire place. The bed is extremely comfortable and they have a very thick mattress pad. We got great nights of sleep. On one of the night stands there is a CD player with a CD of nice background music. There is twice daily maid service so during the 2nd one, they start up the gas fire and play the quiet background music so entering your room after dinner is enviting. There is no DVD player but you can request one.
One of the best perks has to be the free snacks (chips, cookies, candy, and even free soft drinks). It's one of those little consolations since you are paying $400+ for the room, the least they can do is throw in a few things. One design flaw I didn't like with the room design is that the TV armoir is on the side perpendicular to the bed. In order to watch TV in bed, you have to pull out the TV and swivel it.
There is a standard size closet with safe and 2 plush robes (very comfy). The bathroom was large with a with wide bath (& jacuzzi) and shower. One sink is located on the inside and one on the outside by closet so it's easy for two people to get ready. The amenities were lacking. They included shampoo, conditioner, lotion but no slippers and no q-tips.
Overall I must say if you are paying in excess of $400 per night then the Inn is not worth it. Your money is better spent paying the small difference and staying at the Pebble Beach Lodge
