The Bottom Line n/a
Away we go... * It's been a busy time for Pearl Jam and their fans. They announced a title for their seventh album, Riot Act, they announced the tracklist, and the first single, I Am Mine has been released to radio. Oh yeah. The band also opened for The Who this past Monday (sans guitarist Stone Gossard due to prior commitments, he was replaced by a cardboard cutout of himself and the new disc's keyboard player Boom). And this just in: Eddie joined Bruce Springsteen onstage last night in Chicago to sing a duet of My Hometown. Um, yeah, needless to say I'll kill for a copy of that song. Damn I love the excitement that comes from this band putting out new material. * Speaking of Riot Act, in an attempt to thwart the album being shared online weeks before it's release, Sony is sending out all advance copies inside a portable CD player, with it glued shut and a pair of headphones glued into the jack. What a joke... * So I was looking around online a week or so ago, and I ended up reading some press clippings that came with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones new album release back in July. One of the articles had this quote: "We've played with No Doubt plenty of times, and whatever it is they were is not as important to them anymore. Gwen is a star, and I think they realized that whatever they did on record before is not going to work in today's market. `Hey, baby, hey, baby, hey' is what came out. I'm not going to do that. And I'm not going to wear a belly shirt, either." Say what you want, but it is quite true. * Guns N Roses, hot off their appearance at the MTV Awards, announced a late fall tour this week. Tickets for some shows are on sale now through a presale. I scored my ticket for the Boston show this morning: tenth row. The prices are "eh," at $65, $45 and $35. The way I see it though is that I'll see them before this blows up. I have a certain source who says Buckethead hates Axl with an unbridled passion (think Roger Waters with Floyd and multiply it by a factor of 10), and the only reason he's still in the band is that he signed a two year contract that Axl is holding him to. * Rolling Stone readers have named their 100 greatest albums of all time. What a joke. Maladroit? Tragic Kingdom? Zooropa? And get this: the BEAVIS BAND comes in at #58, AHEAD of Back in Black! Just ahead of Beavis is The Strokes. And the new Eminem CD is the 24th best album ever? Come on! The top ten is horribly predictable: Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album, Joshua Tree, Nevermind, Appetite, etc. The only half surprise was the fact that Achtung Baby cracked the top 10. This is a bigger joke than the 100 best pop songs list RS came out with a couple of years back. * Speaking of the new Rolling Stone, I REALLY could have done without the topless Keith Richards cover photo. * Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is making an album? Part of me says "how retarded is that?," but then the 12 year old in me takes over and thinks "how COOL is that?" * R.E.M. is in the studio, making an album with a more "primitive" sound than their last two discs. Thank God, because quite frankly, their last two discs blew more chunks than that chick on the Sopranos the other night. * I've said it once, and I'll say it again: The Vines suck. Bad. If I had to choose between listening to I Want it That Way or Get Free, I'd choose That Way. No, I'm not joking, that is how much I hate the Vines. * Michelle Branch and Santana...sorry it doesn't work for me. Maybe Carlos should try making an album all by his lonesome. * So now Britney is blaming internet piracy for her steep sales decline. I got news for ya Brit...it's called "the next big thing." You aren't it. Get used to the idea that your next album will be lucky to sell 2 million, nevermind the 10 million figures you seem to have gotten used to. Go flip off some more fans ya douchebag. * "If you're really punk rock, you should be open to all sorts of music." So says New Found Glory bassist Ian Grushka. Ian, the reason your band nearly got booed offstage wasn't because they weren't open to your music, it's because your music sucked. Your new album is almost as pathetic as your whole "I'm fat so I'll wear no shirt" gimmick. * You know you're a one hit wonder when VH1 decides to play your one hit rather than your newest single, as was the case with Lifehouse this past week. A #7 chart debut isn't bad, but my guess is is that they'll slide down the chart really really quickly. * Speaking of one hit wonders, who knew that Tonic was still even a band? * What a crappy week for the music charts: Disturbed hits #1 on the album chart, and American Idol idiot Kelly Clarkson hits #1 on the singles chart. WHY GOD WHY? * Oh yeah, get this: Crazy Town says they're the underdog on November 12th, when their new album gets released against the new PJ, TLC, and oh yeah, that Justin guy. No guys, that's called the record company wants you off their roster, so they buried your album in a no win situation. Maybe you can find another RHCP song to rip off... * I'm not a big fan or anything, but it really was good to hear that drugs did not play a role in the death of Drowning Pool singer Dave Williams. His death is still tragic, but at least it didn't come at the hands of what has taken so many young musicians. That's all for now folks, I'll be back in another few weeks, same Matt time, same Matt channel. |
