The Bottom Line Happy 18th.. what's a party without a few gatecrashers huh?
I know, I know... I am really pushing the boundaries with this one but, I love parties and sadly, what should you know about New Zealand cuisine didn't feature in the list. I decided to submit in the 'Southern' category as you can't get much further south then NZ. It is a tenuous connection but a connection all the same. ----------------------------------------- I don't get out to birthday parties much and being a country sort of gal, my tastes in food are very plain. I think I could whip up a fairly tasty 'dinner' though. It may be a bit rough around the edges but it sure tastes good. Appetizer ~ I dont think I will make a very good impression here but I can't be stuck in the kitchen all the time, hey ~ I want to party too guys. Good old potato chips and dip or salsa makes a tasty start to any birthday bash. Have plenty of chilled beer to wash it all down....mmmmm, delish! Soup ~ Pumpkin soup is easy to make, always works out well and if you add heaps of fresh garlic, is sure to please one and all. It's also the only soup I can make! Main course ~ What sort of farm girl would I be if I overlooked the humble roast. Not just any old roast though, this is the NZ version with super tender roast lamb. Some say the best lamb in the world ( I would have to agree with that ) Lots of crisp roast potatoes, pumpkin and kumara ( kiwi sweet potato ) with fresh seasons veges ~ at this time of year it would probably be steamed brocauli and cauliflower. I would prepare a tasty cheese and garlic sauce to serve with the veges and of course, lashings of yummy gravy. Don't eat too much though, we still have pudding to come... Dessert ~ What shall we have ? I think a pavlova served with fresh fruit salad will give the finishing touch to the Kiwi feast. Pavlova is a yummy meringue dish which if cooked properly will be crispy on the outside and marshmellowy on the inside. Covered with fresh whipped cream it is sensational. You may think pavlova is an Aussie dish but don't be fooled. We know the Aussies stole it from us and ... along with other successes like Russell Crowe and Sir Edmund Hillary, have tried to claim it as there own. We don't want to get into all that, it is a birthday after all ~ nothing spoils a party as much as a silly fight! As you stumble away from the table to go and stretch out on the couch, I will put the 'kettle on' for a nice cuppa and a slice of birthday cake ~ chocolate of course. Happy Birthday To You!!!!!!!
