The Bottom Line If you only like "The Impression That I Get," please, STAY HOME!

So a few weeks ago, I'm sitting online and I'm thinking "damn, I haven't been to a ska show in a really long time." So I started poking around online and found an ad for the Molson Snow Jam (think Warped Tour with winter sports), a two day event that was coming to Boston on September 27 and 28. Headlining the event was one of my two very favorite bands, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Also on the bill were Unwritten Law, The Kickovers and Face to Face. All this for $10 in advance (20 at the gate)? Sign me up!

Anyways, I missed the Kickovers. The show started at 3 or so, and I was at work til 5. They went on at about 4:45. That irked me, as I've yet to see them live and I really want to. Their debut album is absolutely sick.

I could care less about Face to Face. I've seen them before and they honestly suck. I don't understand the whole buzz in Boston about them (yes they are local but that doesn't mean they're good!). As for Unwritten Law, I got to the venue about 15 minutes into their set. They played (from what I remember) one song off of their best album, their self titled. That song sounded like crap I might add. They played Seein Red, which got the crowd going, but honestly, they were terrible. The singer was trying to be a mix of Brandon Boyd and Marky Mark (complete with droopy drawers). He then called us a bunch of "f*cking suckers." Yeah whatever penis boy, get off the stage.

So finally, it was time for the Bosstones. Oh no, but it wasn't, because this Molson dude had to come out and annoy us with results from the sports competition. Yeah, because we all care. Note to Molson: you don't come into Boston, take 45 mins to do a 30 min set turnover, and then tell us we have to wait for the Bosstones. People were throwing all sorts of stuff trying to get the jackass off the stage.

To make matters worse, these three douchebag girls show up like 2 minutes before the Bosstones get on stage and set up shop right in front of me. Since I was taping the Bosstones set, I was staying out of the pit. I felt like saying to them "yeah, Avalon (a popular Eurotrash club in Boston) is on the OTHER side of Boston. You wanted to take the GREEN LINE, not the RED LINE." Dumb b*tches probably didn't even know their colors. These girls were just as out of place as an Ozzy fan at a Neil Diamond show. And thrice as annoying. To put an Epinions spin on it, it would be like seeing kristinafh at a Bosstones show (no offense babe, you know I love ya).

So the band finally came out and they began things with some old school...no, not old school music, but Old School Off the Bright, from their newest record, A Jacknife to a Swan. Damn this song sounds good live, and trombonist Christopher Rhodes is just incredible (more on him later).

Not surprisingly, the band basically threw us a "best of" setlist, littered with the well known songs (i.e. Someday I Suppose, Where'd You Go, 1-2-8 etc). There were SOME surprises though, namely the inclusion of Numbered Days, the best song from the band's 1997 breakthrough album Let's Face It.

The band did their normal "what do you want to play Joe?" schtick, where bassist Joe Gittleman picks the next song. He mentioned Isachaar, which would have just about given this reviewer a heart attack had they ever whipped into it, but Dicky said "man, I can't handle that one anymore." After playing a by the numbers version of The Rascal King, they whipped up the best performance of Dr D. this reviewer has heard in a LONG time.

You Gotta Go took on perfect meaning, but the 3 dumb b*tches in front of me couldn't take a hint. Neither could the one boyfriend who was with them, standing like an inch in front of me, puffing on a cigarette. Even when I screamed along with the lyrics at the top of my lungs ("you gotta go! it's time for you to leave! you've worn out your welcome, it's time for you to go...SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!), he still didn't get the hint. Jackass.

So for the encore, Dicky actually brought out his mom. "I go backstage and my mom grabs me and she's like 'Richard, you go back out there and you do that song!."

Ugh. Sure enough, Impression starts, and all of a sudden, the three douchebags in front of me are the biggest Bosstone fans of all time, even though they seemed to be bored for most of the rest of the show (they danced but it was a "I feel like I should be dancing so I'll dance" dances). And then, sure enough, they left as soon as Impression was done. Good riddance. Haven't all the people who liked the band for that one song already heard it live at least once by now? Why can't they just stay the f*ck away? I honestly wouldn't mind, but I'm there mouthing the words to every song and they look at me like I'm crazy. F*ck you, this is my band, I've been supporting them since the beginning of the 1990s, long before your trendy music as*es had ever heard of them.

Anyways, the band closed with a great rendition of Holy Smoke. All in all, it was a good performance by the band. I want to know where the hell the Pay Attention album material went though. Chris Rhodes is the man. Vocally, he's smooth and can really do his part well. Instrumentally, he is so head and shoulders above his predecessor (Dennis Brockenborough, who I still love) that it's sick.

The Molson Snow Jam is going on again today. The Dropkick Murphys are headlining, but I won't be heading back down there. Tickets are $20 at the gate, and the Murphys go on at 9:15 tonight, in case any Bostonians are interested in heading down.
