I live in the Boston area and started using Peapod when I was on bedrest, during a pregnancy. At first I was very excited about the possibility of having groceries delivered directly to my door. I was a little weary of what kind of food would be brought, but it is through Stop and Shop, so figured would probably be fine.
The website is set up so that you can browse aisles if you arent sure what you need. The aisles are divided up by in different categories: General Groceries, Produce, meat and seafood, deli, beauty supplies and meals made easy. Then each category has other categories under it, such as Frozen foods, dairy, beverages etc.
There is also a way to express shop. You type in your list that you are looking for and the website goes through looking for your items. Items are also saved from previous shopping lists as well.
There is also a recipe area on the website and items on sale.
So you choose what you want to buy and press buy. When ready to pay, you click on review to review your order, or check out. At that point, you decide what window of time you would like your groceries to come. You always need to have them delivered either the next day or later. There is usually a 2 hour window. To get a dollar off your total order, you can pick a longer window of time for your groceries to come.
There is a charge to have your groceries delivered. Today I ordered almost 200 dollars in groceries and the charge was 6.95.
Now I have been using Peapod on and off for the last 6 years. I started off needing it, due to a difficult pregnancy. I continued while I had a newborn, and then the service got worse and worse. There began to be many items missing from my order, after I already paid. I had to wait extended amounts of time on hold with customer service trying to get my items. They were often not very friendly or apologetic either. Often items were missing after I had to wait an hour past the time of scheduled delivery as well.
This week I once again ordered from Peapod, after about a year of non using, in hopes that they have improved. (As my daughter has been sick and I cant get out to the store again.) When my groceries came, all of the meat and deli items were missing. The Peapod guy had already left and I noticed missing items, as I put things away. So I waited on hold again for customer service. I asked if the man could come back with my food and she said that I may need to reschedule for tomorrow. That kind of defeated the purpose. I had no meat in my house or food to send my daughter to school with for her sandwiches. I told her that I couldnt wait another day, so she said that she would credit my account and would call me back after asking if he had the groceries (at my suggestion.) She never called me back. So I waited an hour and called customer service again. I asked if the driver had found the food and would he be bringing it by. (By now I have wasted all morning at my house waiting for them.) I was told that he did not find it and would not be coming by. I let her know that I would go out to the store then to replace those items and wanted to make sure first. So I went to the grocery store and after I returned, who shows up? Peapod. The driver returned with some of the meat that I had ordered. So now I have double the meat and some still missing. I am not sure what is going to go on with my account.
My husband has wanted me to not use them again because of the problems over the past years. But, when the weather is rough and I have asthmatic children, I have just been stuck.
I have to say that the food that comes is in good condition. The meat, fruit and vegetables do look good. If only the customer service and execution of the service was better. The food prices are more expensive than I normally spend shopping in store.
They also have a spot for tipping. I filled it in, so now I paid close to 15 dollars extra to have these missing items from my list. Not to mention now I have gone and spent additional money at the grocery store to try to replace the meat that was once lost. I am kind of annoyed at this point and Peapod did not apologize in any way, or seem to recognize that they messed up. I had to request my money back. They couldnt understand why I wouldnt reschedule for another day, when it was their fault. I was told I couldnt reschedule for later in the same day either.
At this point I would not recommend Peapod. You will overspend and even if that was worth it to you, you may not actually get what you overspent your money on. I think I would just rather order take out for a few days, until you can get yourself to the store. It isn't worth the risk.
