So I had a brain fart and created my own extreme-o-meter music scale!
by vanwarp | Sep 29 '02
Musical styles and genres are getting to be so complicated...bands are becoming more and more complex...no problem, just use the extreme-o-meter music scale of metal madness!

Yes and I agree, Pantera/Mettalica/Iron Maiden all somewhat heavier musically than Dream Theater and Stratovarius but not "technically" speaking. I was looking for a transition area and I used 4 on my scale of 1 to 8. I included everything to do with speed and technically difficult music (guitar virtuoso) and other added musical difficulties.

I understand that not all of Dream Theater music belongs at number 4 and that they were probably not the best example to use...I will modify my extre-o-meter list! Thanks for your input.

Yes, Cryptopsy is technically brutal and would be considered an 8 on my scale of extreme-o-meter music (as for Suffocation, they are a good example but not necessarily a great example).

At the Top of my scale, numeric #1, you find the least agressive/extreme heavy metal music and at the bottom, numeric #8, you have the most agressive/extreme heavy metal music...

1-Heavy, 2-heavier than 1, 3-heavier than 2 and so on...until you get to 8 - the heaviest music of them all!

I felt that EXTREME was the key word for me, so you'll find that at number 1 you get the least extreme heavy metal and at number 8 the most extreme heavy metal.

Children of Bodom and Meshuggah both different but both belong at number 8. Same as Cryptopsy and Suffocation. These bands go full throttle and never let up the intensity, not even to catch their breath...they assault you with their music, it's not always pretty, it's often very brutal, and it's...total madness!

but Children of Bodom with Meshuggah? I dunno about that one... Yeah, they make hyper-active, ritalin-soaked music, but is it the same as Suffocation, or Cryptopsy and such...?

Maybe it's just me... I can't take those guys seriously. That keyboardist needs his right hand chopped off.

Make that his left one too.

The Carpenters on my list? Much too sweet, gentle, innocent, peaceful and mellow to be considered extreme music. Sorry! ;)

Arch Enemy would fall between 6 and 7...probably more a 7 on my extreme-o-meter music scale of heaviness...

You might want to explain a little why you put those artist where you do. But very good all the same. Very Helpful.

Certainly an interesting scale you've got here... but where would a group like the Carpenters fall on this scale?

*ducks before something is thrown in this direction*

Your extreme-o-meter music scale is a good one. You should get a patent before you see some nut selling it on a late night infomercial

Seems like everything on the planet is merging nowadays... people of different races are getting married, on the road you see vehicles that are half car, half van. Now, there are so many musical hybrids the possibilities are endless. Lord knows the food business is headed in a similar direction, even though I'm sticking with hot dogs and sour cream & onion chips for now.

But yes indeed, it is a great time to be alive!

I agree with you. Defining heaviness of music or the like is so subjective. My music tastes run the gamut from classical to folk/Celtic, to oldies but goodies, to current rock to metallica/Iron Butterfly/Zepellin/Hendrix type music. Pretty weird for a middle aged woman, but there it is.
