ON FILMS AND FILMMAKERS IN OUR BRAVE NEW WORLDOct 01 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line In under 30 words, why should I have any recommendation on Writer's Corner: Satire? A few months back, an Internet hoax promised a Spielberg version of the Intifada. Impossible!! Robots will be granted human rights long before Palestinians. And in case we get the wrong ideas, the intrepid BBC informs us that Spielberg and Tom Cruise support The Mans war against Iraq. Spielberg said he believes that Oval Office Object "has reliable information on the fact that Saddam Hussein is making weapons of mass destruction." It doesn't seem to make any difference to Spielberg that no "reliable information" has ever been shown. The tale spinner is at home with our Disinformation Chief. Our dear Tom Cruise wisely contributed that Hussein "committed many crimes against humanity and his own people." True enough, Tom. It is also true that the U.S. government aided and provoked Hussein in committing these crimes, but that is uhhh, too complicated for Tom. For Hollywood stars who believe their own bull, The Man is their man, a Prez whose world is as morally uncomplicated as their latest nondescript action blockbuster: good guys and bad guys; good guys got these nice and shiny toys and they use them to kill the bad guys. And the dying, also known as "collateral damage" is done by extras with names such as "Child three" and "Peasant Woman five." I would like Spielberg making a film like "The Empire strikes at Iraq," starring Tom Cruise as a Special Forces lieutenant with a thing for motorcycles and green-eyed Arab princesses. It would be amazingly stupid, misleading, over the top, condescending, entertaining, etc., but it would still be a thousand times better than what Oval Office Object is producing. In the credits, Spielberg could even assure us that "No real Iraqis were harmed during the making of this film." |
