Shoes for all kinds of runners

The Bottom Line A great shoe for the money even though it is hard to put a price on healthy feet -- catered to THE RUNNER, not the runner to the shoe.

SAUCONY

I first chose to run with Saucony shoes during the Gulf War. I think it was the patriotic gesture of running with a shoe made in America instead of some foreign sweatshop and because of the fact that Saucony’s forefather’s made Army boots for soldiers during WWII. 1991 was also when Saucony started to make some headlines after they released the Ground Reaction Inertia Device (GRID™). This was the first midsole technology to offer both cushioning and stability.

Saucony was really ONLY a runner’s company until several years ago. They resisted the urge to make flashy, trendy cross trainers for kids to spend their parent’s money on. They understand that runners come in all different shapes and sizes and they cater to each individual. Saucony’s current line carries running shoes built for durability, stability, cushioning, and even for racing speed.

Saucony.com is an excellent site for beginning runners to weekend racers. Saucony’s SHOE-ZER is a “choose your own shoe” Internet program. A variety of questions leads you to recommended shoes based on weight, miles per week, and even what types of surfaces you run on.

You can expect Saucony shoes to cater to your running style; you are going to find a shoe that will fit your style and body. I would not give that credit to some of the major shoe companies that seem to want customers to conform to their shoes instead.

Now for the actual guts of the Saucony Shoe:

The GRID™ system mentioned before is a revolutionary way to resolve the problem of offering comfort and providing stability at the same time. There used to be a negative correlation between a cushioned ride and the lateral support of a shoe … UNTIL Saucony introduced the GRID™. When your heel hits the ground, the interwoven elastomers bend to the shape of your heel, absorbing the shock. The midsole compresses at the same time to keep your foot stable. Saucony is the ONLY manufacturer to offer this technology. They call it GRID™ because it is actually a little grid of the elastomers built into the heel of your shoe.

The 3D GRID™ system is a more advanced stability enhancement where the midsole AND its walls are reinforced with these elastomer filaments. It’s like a little tiny web of stability running around the heel of your shoe.

Saucony has also added a High Rebound Compound to the front of its shoes. This compound attenuates shock over a longer period of time, which helps save your metatarsals during the final part of your foot strike.

Saucony uses a combination of all of these breakthroughs to make their Custom Ride Management (CRM). CRM allows you to define the level of cushioning or stability you want. There is CRM-Cushioning and CRM-Durability. The Cushioning is the level of GRID™ you want in your shoe from a light to heavy striker. The level of Durability depends on how much you want to control your pronation. Saucony offers shoes from moderate to ultimate stability by adding stability regions to the midsole.

Most of this seems confusing, however, rest assured that I put more miles in on these shoes with significantly less problems than other runners I train with. Following the guidance on how to choose a running shoe (http://www.epinions.com/content_2776342660) and running with a shoe built for runners, you should lessen your injuries if they have plagued you in the past.

Saucony is an average priced shoe. Their brand new shoes run over $100, however, you can shop around and find deals that will lower the average cost to around $50-70. I also cover where to shop for shoes in my earlier article. Overall, Saucony is a great shoe for the money even though it is hard to put a price on having healthy feet.
