20 Lives Touched by Death of Great White Hope

Written: Dec 07 '06 (Updated Dec 07 '06)
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Bang For The Buck
Pros:Great acting. Brief history of the '60s
Cons:Very realistic women's cosmetic make-up of the '60s--scary.
The Bottom Line: When was the last time you saw a movie with a huge cast? Go see it.

Plot Details:. This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

A few useless words from the writer:
Friday night, I wanted to see a movie and the choices to me were either James Bond or Bobby. I decided to go with Bobby because James Bond is more popular and probably will be showing in the theaters longer than Bobby. I am glad I did. Despite the fact that Bobby Kennedy was tragically killed, this movie showed that he embodied everything hopeful and positive about the humanity of America in that generation. This movie is about why the loss of Bobby Kennedy was so heart felt not just because of his abrupt end of presidential candidacy but because his spirit represented the voice and enthusiasm of America, and perhaps the world, toward the future, free and fearless.

This review is created with the intent to help those who have not seen the movie to make a decision. Therefore, you will not find plot descriptions that I believe will give away too much. This review will still provide the shallow things that I think a no-brainer movie goer looks for. Don't hesitate to give a low rating for this review. "Make no mistake about it!"

This is a YES recommendation review.

And if you agree with most of what I mentioned below, you are certified to go see this movie.

Cast and Credits:
For the sake of convenience, a list of the cast is included below.
Harry Belafonte .... Nelson
Joy Bryant .... Patricia
Nick Cannon .... Dwayne
Emilio Estevez .... Tim Fallon
Laurence Fishburne .... Edward Robinson
Brian Geraghty .... Cooper
Heather Graham .... Angela
Anthony Hopkins .... John Casey
Helen Hunt .... Samantha
Joshua Jackson .... Wade
Ashton Kutcher .... Fisher
Shia LaBeouf .... Cooper
Lindsay Lohan .... Diane
William H. Macy .... Paul
Svetlana Metkina .... Lenka Janacek
Of course it's such a big cast, go check the rest yourself at http://www.imdb.com

No brainer factors:
1) Date flix: I think so. And why? I noticed several ladies broke into tears. Bring handkerchief just in case.
2) Hunks or Babes: I don’t know….maybe Lindsay Lohan or Heather Graham, Ashton Kutcher, Nick Cannon, Svetlana Metkina, Jennifer Sims, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (so very sexy), Joy Bryant.
3) Red hot flesh-showing scene: I don’t recall, but Heather Graham got me a bit excited.
4) Kick-butt action sequence: None.
5) Spectacular scene: I don’t recall.
7) Brain cells requirement: Some. 39.9% if you insist on a figure. It helps if you know some history. This is not for you if you don’t care about historical events.
9) Tear jerking melodrama: See above, Number 1, Date Flix.
10) Gut wrenching gore: Some near the end. Mostly blood.
11) Oscar Contender: Sharon Stone? But what role? Freddy Rodríguez (I)? Emilio Estevez?? Best Picture???
12) Most Memorable Quote: Miguel (Jacob Vargas), “We are the new ‘Black’.” (correct me if I’m mistaken because I’m not sure if I got it right 100%).

Reasons I went to see this movie:
Come on, when was the last time a movie had a cast this big? For me, just the kitchen story was worth the trip. See Morpheus act like a kitchen king and rule with blueberry cobbler.

Plot Outline:
Ok, where do I begin? Let’s just say life and emotion of 20 people in days leading up to Bobby Kennedy’s death on the Democratic primary election night. I’m likely to be ridiculed for this, but I think Freddy Rodríguez (I)’s role as José is the lead actor.

The experience:
Surprisingly feel good. Strange isn’t it? I guess Emilio Estevez got himself a new niche—feel good tragedy.

This is definitely a gutsy take on the subject matter. Anyone who could summarize that era in 120 minutes deserves Oscar nomination.

This is not a movie with CGI, not with breath-taking action, not with thrilling suspense, or elaborate costume or huge movie set. This is a movie of really good acting. Although Laurence Fishburne was very much Morpheus-like lecturing paternalistically to the Mexican kitchen staffs, I mean “Latinos”, they are some of the finest acting in recent movies.
