The Bottom Line Many male and female students have to sometimes deal with the issues of sexual harassment while pursuing their studies. Keep yourself safe with knowledge.

Many parents and potential candidates to our nations' best schools usually look at all the positive attributes of a university. Very rarely do they read about or dig into the various police reports on sexual harassment and violations occurring on campus. Just like any community, university and college campuses know crimes. Whether they are assault and batteries, burglaries and thefts, they are potential crimes that may be perpetrated against a loved one, your son or daughter. A more insidious type of crimes that take place on most of our campuses has to do with sexual bullying. Many of the students, from freshmen to seniors can find themselves in very difficult situations when dealing such issues. These kids may be suffering in private while they are about to engage in their studies.

This review is the result of my two-year work as a former Resident Advisor and Club president. I saw it all in all the reports and situations I had to intervene.

When was the last time you checked into the crime rate of your university?

Knowledge is power. If you know what types of crimes are prevalent on campus (although any crimes can happen any time), you will not put your guard down. All you need to do is to request a printout of the crime reports showing a statistical breakdown of the most violent crimes occurring on campus. Most campus police stations will be more than willing to provide you with that information. In some rare cases, a small administrative fee may be added. It may also take some time before you receive that report. The freedom Information Act allows you to get some vital information. The university or college community is like any other human communities. From the dormitories to the most famous off-campus apartment complexes, crimes can happen and do happen on a regular basis. At the level of university campuses, sexual harassment is one of the crimes that takes place and is often seen as aggressive flirting. In other words, a no is not taken for a no. The perpetrator sets his/her sight on the potential victim and does not want to stop despite all the messages that may have been conveyed to them. What's the recourse in such cases? Armed with a cell phone and the campus security and police station, the students should make a quick phone call for help.

Male as well as female students can be targeted for sexual harassment or bullying

It may start as innocent taunting, teasing and flirting. Then, it may progress to the point where somebody makes the first move by asking for a date. If the answer continues to be no, the petitioner should back off. If no is said more than once, no must be respected and taken for an answer. On many occasions, the gentleman or young woman will not let go. They will want to pursue the target of their desire to the point of angering that person. More than that, on some occasions, profane words, graphics may be used when the answer continues to be no. For sure, the pursuit soon becomes a headache, a tough time for anybody to tolerate. Some serious cases of harassment and bullying may involve chasing, sexual touching, bumping or grabbing, lewd talk, the passing of sexually explicit pictures or notes even during class time. These things often happen in the case of a senior trying to get the attention of a freshman. Very rarely will some unscrupulous teachers try to take advantage of their students. Unfortunately, they often to bargain good grades. They want to engage in the trading of improved grades for sexual attention and favors. As a parent, if your college kid comes to you with such complaints, you should take it all the way to the university's administration and campus police.

Harassment both at work and school can be hard to deal with

We all know that college students will experience many things during their studies. But nothing should prevent them from meeting their educational objectives. If they are the targets of repeated and constant bullying and sexual coercion, they will not be able to focus on the things that matter to them. They may squander that invaluable investment.

The same way that most universities want to promote a drug-free environment, they will want to protect students from aggressive come-ons, harassment and sexual bullying.
