The Bottom Line Think carefully about accutane. It may change your life! But then it may change it back!
Well now folks, it is not very often that I would stray away from the Music Equipment category - actually this is my first time in a new area of Epinions. So I cannnot swim, then please help me out! In other words no NR's please! Please treat me like an Epinions Virgin once more. I want to talk today with you all about the revolutionary acne treatment, accutane. No doubt all of you have heard of it, if not through the news, some of you may have been treated with it. Accutane is an acne treatment like no other. In blister packs of 56 it can only be prescribed by your dermotologists after many blood tests and long discussions. Why? Well it is a very powerful drug, and although it will more than likely clear you of acne for a long time, it will come with side effects - many major. Everyone will experience very dry chapped lips, most will suffer from joint pain, and some will suffer depression and in rare cases suicide. As you can see, this is no over the counter spot killer. I want to discuss with you my treatment of accutane. I am 25 years old, and have suffered from moderate to bad acne since I was 12. Although from my picture I look spot free, close up, I do have spots, and to an extent this has gotten me down for many years. Last November, I was refered by my doctor to the dermo for accutane. I was granted an appointment for January time. After 3 appointments and 2 blood tests, I was apporved for the drug, and sent home with a 4 month supply. Accutane has to be taken everyday for 4-5 months for the treatment to be effective. For the fist month, I suffered side effects of dry lips and sore back, and to be honest, they were the only side effects I suffered for my whole dosage. It took it untill month 3 for me to see results. For the first time in 12 years, I was totally clear of acne, yes I still had light scarring but this is hardly noticable. I was amazed at the results accutane presented me with. I continued taking the drug untill month 4, when I went back to my dermo and he pronounced me as CURED. You would no believe the difference accutane made to my skin and to my confidence. The photo above was taken on the final week of my treatment in July, and as you can see it has made quite a difference. Accutane is a remarkable treatment and should be used when you have servere long term acne. Unfortunately it is now October, and my acne is coming back. Accutane is meant to last between 1-20 years and for more than 50% of people it is a treatment where your acne NEVER comes back. With me it has ;lasted 10 weeks. I must admit I am very disappointed with this, I have an appointment with my dermo next month, and it looks like a second course is needed - this is rare - and I am not sure if I want all the side effects again - constant chapped lips is very sore indeed. So there you have it, my experience with the wonder drug that is Accutane. What do you think? Have any of you had this problem with the drug? The full list of side effects for this drug at normal dosage are as follows: (Note than unlike many drugs, you are definately gonna' experience some of these nasty effects! Redness Dryness (Eyes, facial area, back, chest) Sight Problems Joint Pain Hair Loss (Rarely a gain) Depression Fatigue Headaches Peeling Palms Rash Skin infection Sunburn sensitive skin Intenstial problems Liver problems Vomitting Urinary discomfort. Just ask yourself, are the risks worth the benifit? I am not slamming or not recommending accutane, just asking you to be careful! Regards P. Now I must get back to the land of music and music equipment - where I belong! I'm lost here in beauty. |
