There must be a defect in your particular unit. Take it back where you bought it and get another. The filter should never ever get clogged because this vacuum doesn't suck dirt into the filter like standard vacuum cleaners. Instead, after the dirt is sucked into the unit it is literally thrown (by centrifugal force) into the dirt collection canister before it can reach the filter. Its quite an extraordinary design, although not revolutionary. The inventor stole the idea from giant industrial vacuums that they use in places like saw mills. However, Dyson was the first one to adapt the technique for use in home vacuum cleanersat least according to their sales literature.
I've owned a Dyson for several years, and am amazed that the filter has never needs cleaningnot even a little. To demonstrate how much I use my vacuum, I have to empty the canister several times a week. (I have pets which shed a lot.) So Im amazed that the filter never clogs. BTW, I have to constantly remove hair from the beater brush; too bad they cant design a way to avoid that problem.
I have big complaints about the awful hose design, so I completely agree with you on that issue. But regarding suction, you should return your unit or contact Dyson for a repair while it's still under warranty. From your description, there is definitely something wrong with yours.
P.S. Friends tell me that the newest Dyson model has fixed the bad hose design of your model. Maybe you can return it where you got it and talk them into giving you a newer model since yours is obviously defective. Good luck to you.
