| mmcphee's Full Review: KitchenAid 4.5-qt. Mixing Bowl with Handle K45SBWH |
It's that time of year. The house is toasty warm, sweet smells of vanilla and butter waft through the air, Christmas carols can be heard over the hum of the mixer and cries of "she used all the red sprinkles!" Yes it is cookie season. To keep the whole process moving as quickly as possible, a few years ago I purchased a second bowl for my KitchenAid mixer, the 4.5-qt. Mixing Bowl with Handle K45SBWH.
The Basics
This large work bowl fits pivot head KitchenAid Mixers (models K45SS, KSM90 and KSM103). The bowl is stainless steel and is dishwasher safe. There is a large sturdy handle riveted to the outside of the bowl.
How I Use it
Ever had to beat egg whites and then fold them into a beaten batter? It's a pain when you only have one mixer bowl. With two bowls the process is smooth and quick. You can make a filling for a cake and the frosting while the cake bakes and have them both ready to go. You can mix up frosting to decorate sugar cookies and get another batch of cookies going.
Sure you can transfer whatever you have mixed into another bowl, wash the mixer bowl and start again. I personally prefer to do all the clean-up at once if at all possible and I hate to hand wash anything. It speeds up prep time by not having to stop in the middle of cooking to wash one item. Once the baking project is over I just put both bowls in the dishwasher and they come out clean.
The handle is adequate. It makes twisting the bowl to lock it on the mixer base easy. When scraping out the bowl, the handle provides good leverage as well. The flat bottom provides a nice sturdy base when set on a counter or table.
Storage can be a bit of an issue. You cannot store both bowls on the mixer and they don't stack inside of each other well due to the handles. Since it holds 4.5 quarts the bowl is rather large and takes up quite a bit of shelf space.
Final Thoughts
Once you finally break down and shell out the $35 for the extra bowl you will kick yourself for not having done it earlier. You will be surprised how much more enjoyable baking becomes when you get to spend less time washing.
