It may be shocking... (Reply to this comment)

but Ruffin's work I like most is his 'Plant from outer space' interpretation in Little shop of horrors.
Fine review, Stephen.

I think you mean "Psychedelic Shack." I think Edwards had a better voice, but Ruffin was genuinely anguished--at least about his billing.

...I listen to the ones sung by Dennis Edwards. You can't beat "Runaway Child," "Cloud Nine," and "Papa was a Rolling Stone." The Temptations "Psychedelic Soul" album was one of their best!!!

Ruffin will always have a star on my walk of fame for "I know I'm Losing You," and "I Wish it Would Rain." I looked up "soul music" in the dictionary, and there was a picture of Ruff. ;>

"My Girl" (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Music
The Miracles recorded it. That David Ruffin was grittier will get no argument from me (or, I'd think, anyone else), but he crooned "My Girl." (I didn't mention that the Ruffin with some hits I revere was David's brother, Jimmy, who sounded/sounds to me as possessed of more gravitas.

Yeah, I know Smokey wrote a lot of Tempts hits, but I don't think his voice could have pulled off something like "My Girl". Ruffin, to me, was just a lot grittier. But, I guess we're agreeing to disagree here :)

Listen to "The Temptations Sing Smokey," plus no one can sound rough as far up in the falsetto register as David Ruffin sometimes went. Ruffin singing "My Girl" (the biggest Temptations hit and possible the biggest Motown hit) is pretty silky, and a number of Temptation hits were written (and often coproduced) by Robinson.

It's a shame that this collection doesn't have Ruffin's cover of I Want You Back. It doesn't change the arrangement in any significant way, but Ruffin's rich, warm baritone vocals give the song a new depth that Michael Jackson did bring to the original. Granted, Jackson was infectious with his unbridled energy, but those little kid twee vocals made the original edge a little too closely to novelty-hit territory. Ruffin does the song much more justice.

Nice review, with one complaint. While I don't know how much of his solo stuff sounded, I think if you compare Smokey and Ruffin vocally, they're about as far away from one another as you could imagine.
Ruffin's voice was urgent, pleading and soulful, while Smokey was (and is)very much a smooth, pop crooner-type. Now if you tried to compare Smokey with Eddie Kendricks, then we might have an argument...
