lambchops's Full Review: Purple by Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots wasn't supposed to be any more than a one-album wonder following the overwhelming success of their debut, "Core." Well, "Purple" managed to prove to audiences and critics everywhere that STP had a bit more left to offer. This album continues in the same vein as the aforementioned debut. In fact, it is arguably the better of the first two albums. "Purple" spawned a hit or two. It's not uncommon to hear 'Vasoline,' 'Interstate Love Song,' or 'Big Empty' on rock stations. Sit back, and enjoy the ride as provided by STP and as narrated by little ol' me.
MEAT PLOW
Great song that was suprisingly never released as a single. It's quite honestly one of the best on the album...hands down. So yeah, the album definitely starts on a high point. My favorite part of the song is the articulation that lead singer Scott Weiland possesses. In fact, I can hear the first line of the song "fine place for a day full of breakdowns - takes more than a meltdown to show us how - throw a tack on the road, stop the meatplow -
got a bullet but it ain't mine." Very catchy...classing STP.
VASOLINE
This is a very popular STP song so far as fans go. Without a doubt, this is a super song. I enjoy it quite a bit in fact. I don't know exactly what to say specifically about this song except for that fact that Weiland has a great voice as shown by "Vasoline." The DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz also exhibit talent and a knack for the industry with this star-making vehicle. My favorite lyric? "it isn't you, isn't me search for things you can't see going blind, out of reach somewhere in the vasoline."
LOUNGE FLY
Okay. Let me preface this by saying that I had a crush on a teacher (he was younger than I am now) when I was in high school. My love was affirmed when I walked into the room one lunch hour, and he was playing this CD and this song was going. Talk about love at first sight. With that said, "Lounge Fly" is a fun song. It's very fast, very driving and very lyrically catchy. If I listen to this album, this song may very likely be stuck in my head for days to come. It's happened before. There's alot of rhyming and word play within the lyrics. Great song from a great band.
INTERSTATE LOVE SONG
This is possibly my least favorite STP song of all time. ALthough, I also have to mention that it's their most popular (so far as I can remember). The band was recognized by critics and fans alike for their talent following the release of this piece as a single. Well, I don't like it. Somehow it seems to soft for me. I prefer STP when they are a bit louder and/or when Weiland seems a bit more angry. But, like I already mentioned this is a favorite for many people. Yikes.
STILL REMAINS
So far as STP songs go, this one is pretty sad and depressing. It's also a pretty good song. I don't really have that much to say about it except to point out a favorite line or two. Notice how it's almost poetic..."she holds my hand we share a laugh, slipping orange blossom breezes - love is still and sweat remains a cherished gift unselfish feeling..."
PRETTY PENNY
Okay. I like this song quite a bit. It's not usually seens as one of STP's best, but I enjoy it nonetheless. It's a song about longing and loss. If you haven't heard it or skip over it when you're listening to the entire CD, I suggest you stop here, at track 6.
SILVERGUN SUPERMAN
STP has a way with sounds and they have a way with lyrics. In fact, this is just another example how even their lesser-known material is still of high quality. There are no fillers on this album. All of the songs are worthy of your attention and your years, "Silvergun Superman" is no exception. A favorite line? "I can hear when the pig whispers sweetly jealousy is the weapon you kill me..." Great song!
BIG EMPTY
You've heard this song before. It was all over the radio and MTV in addition to all over the ill-fated movie "The Crow." This is a GREAT STP song. It's one of their best (I know I keep saying this, but they are a great band). "Big Empty" is a very melodic sound. It sort of teeters back and forth between being loud and being tender. It's got a number of memorable points, but my favorite happens to be as follows: "Time to take her home her dizzy head is conscience laden Time to wait too long To wait too long To wait too long...." Great guitars and sounds thanks to the DeLeo's and Kretz.
UNGLUED
Great STP song that was never released as a single. Maybe it was a pointed word in the first line of the first stanza that stopped this from happening, but whatever the reason, "Unglued" remains a super song. Yet another high-quality STP diddy.
ARMY ANTS
This song reflects on just what you would think...we are all little lemmings doing just as society tells us to. Aside from that message, "Army Ants" is a decent song. It's not one of my favorites, but as a self-professed lemming I like the message. Scott Weiland sure does have a special touch when it comes to words.
KITCHENWARE & CANDYBARS
This is a fan favorite song that was never widely released as a single. This is a slow-mid tempo song that showcases Weiland's vocal talents. It's catchy with a tinge of depression. The last line of the song is also my favorite of the album as a whole "you read the words and it sells you life they sell their words, but it's all a lie." Why? I don't know. I just enjoy it.
Well, as you can see, I like Stone Temple Pilots. It's not that they can't do wrong, it's just that they haven't as of yet. Sure Scott Weiland's had his share of bad press having to do with his Heroin addiction. But, I believe that this album is less heroin-tainted than their next, "Tiny Music..."
This is a fun, great, superb, catchy album. It's definitley a must for rock fanatics like myself. Don't even attempt to call yourself an STP fan if you are missing this CD in your collection.
