Renee-
lmfao.
Whoa. You know, I'm so unhip I had to search this on Google to learn what you meant... And now I'm LSHICAR!!*
You have an innate ability to make me literally laugh out loud. While I might type those "lmao"/"lol"/"rofl" statements usually all I mean is that I smiled. Except for you so thanks!
TIAGTKICMARSL** Especially considering you can't hear my squeaky mouse voice or see my pinhead.
I'm in Malaysia right now, but will be hopping over to Melbourne for the xmas/new year break.
So that would make you of French origin? Or Swedish? Finnish?
Hopefully I can catch a couple of these movies there, though doubtful as it's a family thing (I had problems watching The Piano with my mum , let alone anything even suggesting incest).
Ah. This reminds me of a time I was living in Paris on a fellowship back in 95 (I was 25)... Me mum visited and we decided to see a movie called "Noubliez pas que tu vas à mourir"... Who knew?! In the middle of the film, the main character (a guy) winds up in very explicit threesome with another man and woman. The scene went on and on. I've never sunk so low into my movie seat as then.
If you can recommend a good video store in malaysia with even 1/2 of your picks, I will buy you a new unicycle.
Oooh. That's a challenge. If you can learn to ride the unicycle, I'll send you not one, but two ice cream sandwiches!
-John
*Just made this up (or I at least I never saw it before)... Laughing so hard I cracked a rib.
**Thanks, it's always great to know I could make a relative stranger laugh.

Renee-
Sounds eerily familiar... wonder where from? Hmmm..
Either you mean America or Epinions. Or both. Or something else? Anyway-- yes.
Never heard of much less seen any of these films, but I suppose will have to remain in cultural neanderthal until I get to a country where I can actually find them...
And what country are you in now, praytell? Perhaps I can recommend a good video store??

I've seen some Michael Snow and Brakhage, but not enough to make a strong impression. Their work is shown frequently at Anthology Film Archives (Mekas, president/founder), but shame on me for not going to more of their screenings. I'll take your comment as a further incentive.
Eraserhead and The Kingdom are essential as well.
I wasn't sure if you were singling out certain films from my list or re-proposing items. But yes, they are indeed essential. (But then, I feel that about my entire list!)
I admire your work-- glad for your comment.

Oh man, are you still the mistress of Tony Blair? Or have you supplanted the wife by now, and have moved in as his once and future paramour and rightful bride?

This comment is hilarious. I seriously laughed out loud.
You deserve at least half an ice cream sandwich for this comment alone. Where can I send it?

Oh. my. God. I thought I was the only person on earth who had actually seen A Boy and His Dog -- and actually I walked out of it, something I never do. (If I'd known Don Johnson was going to be milked for his semen, perhaps I would've stayed). Believe it or not, I was at a Don Johnson film festival (if you want to see another cult film of his, try the hallucinogenic The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart, 1970), by myself; amazingly, NO ONE I KNEW wanted to go to a Don Johnson film festival.
So I guess I will let myself lick an ice cube for having seen one and a half of these movies.

Obviously, I recommend the films you just mentioned from my list... Yes, they are all wonderful, as far as I'm concerned. If your wife is put off by weirder fare, I'd watch Eraserhead alone! And definitely do not watch that one if she becomes pregnant.
Happy viewing!

I have seen none of these films, and been aware of only two (Eraserhead and Safe, both already on my search list). My search list now also contains Celine and Julie Go Boating, Careful, a Boy and His Dog, and that Lars Von Trier thing. They sound fascinating! May my wife not forbid me from renting any more movies by myself when you and i are done.

Where can I send the ice cream sandwich? Hope it survives the trip...
Incidentally, I recently saw a movie that I would have had on my list, had I known about its existence when I wrote it: Rene Laloux's "Planete Sauvage" (mistranslated as "Fantastic Planet" (1973).

I haven't seen any of these! A few look to be right up my alley, I must check them out. Thanks for the handy list!

I just saw A Boy and his Dog last night because of Howard Creech's recommendation and plan to review it. Only one here I've seen!
