A Note To My Bride On Her Birthday
Oct 19 '02
The Bottom Line The Bottom Line? I should have married you sooner.
Good Morning Darling, and Happy Birthday!
If you're reading this, you found the note by the alarm clock telling you to go look at the computer screen. So you don't worry, I am at Starbucks getting you a cinnamon spice mocha (caf, whipped cream, extra hot) and a blueberry muffin. I've got the oldest with me too (she wanted to get a hot chocolate). So if you're missing either of the other two, I can't help you there.
So...why an epinion for your birthday? Well, you've seen me writing / reading / rating so much during the past couple years, I thought it was appropriate. Unfortunately, there is no rating scheme in this catagory, but rest assured, you'd get 5 stars if there were!
Kelly, besides Jesus saving me from my sins, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. The past seven years of marriage have just flown by, and as I look back, I don't have a single regret. Our three little girls are so precious! How could being a daddy be any better? Before I had them, nobody cheered and hailed me a hero for changing the burned-out bulb in a nightlight. Nobody thought I was the strongest, smartest, coolest guy on planet earth. Nobody begged me to spend time with them even if it was just scribbling on scraps of paper.
Those little ones have changed me. You remember the guy you married? The hunter, the fisherman, the classic car owner? Ever thought you'd see me wearing a pink feather scarf thing, drinking imaginary tea with Barbie and Soft Baby? I'm proud to say that I do it! I love imaginary tea! It's my favorite now. I think I'll order it in restaurants--think of the money we'll save! And I do owe it to you--you are the one who makes sure that these things don't pass me by. It's you who takes me by the arm to look out the back window so I can see, and appreciate, the artistic masterpieces done in sidewalk chalk; so I can watch the middle one eat raw corn on the cob--cob and all; so I can watch the youngest "chase" the older two.
You have given me so much. Our house is always a home. We have wonderful dinners, clean clothes, and chocolate syrup to put in our milk. You, who graduated first in a class of 450+ in high school, summa cum laude in undergrad, and 5th in our class at law school. You carried me through law school, yet you now set it aside, instead, spending much of your day contemplating how to get the marker out of the couch cushion, counting the number of chocolate chips in each cookie, and spraying Shout on lasagna stains in undies (how do they get it clear down there??)
You, my little city girl, have learned that a female elk is also called a cow and no longer think I'm going to blast some poor farmers milk supply. You have learned about tying leaders for steelhead and how they differ from salmon leaders. You know the difference between a Wiggle Wart and a Hot-N-Tot. You know how to cure eggs for bait and make brine for smoking fish. You know the history of the .30-06 and why Leupold is the best scope for the money. You appreciate why I saved for 3 years to buy my Leica binoculars. You don't mind me bringing home dead things for us to eat. You are the most understanding person I've ever met. Yet I love the fact that you lay down your boundaries (I still think you should learn to how to butcher out a deer or elk). When you say "that's it" I know that "that's it." I want so much for you to approve of me and love me, I'd do whatever you ask!
Now, on your 31st birthday, here you sit in front of a computer monitor, wondering where I'm going with this. Simply put: I have no idea. I just want you to know that you are not just loved, you are adored. I will keep you on a pedestal as long as you'll let me. I look forward to next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. More kids (God willing) and more good times. I hope someday to have a son, but I'm getting so used to girls, it matters hardly at all. I'll keep teaching the girls about the outdoors, and I know they'll continue to love it. You will be right there encouraging them. You will be right there encouraging me--like you have all these years so far. I remember when I first started in the practice of law. I was keeping those awful office hours, trying to make partner as quickly as possible. And when I did, you gave me the biggest hug and one of "your" smiles. The smile I love. The smile that means all is well with your soul. The smile that makes all well with my soul. I love that smile.
I love that you like my jokes. I love that you let the girls "help" you in the kitchen--if you can call it help. I love it that you scratch my back every Sunday at church; and I love that other men notice and are jealous because their wives don't scratch theirs. I love it that you scrapbook. I love your taste in everything. I love you truly and absolutely. I love it that we talk to each other using movie lines. "You are my biggest fan." "I love you man."
There is nothing about you I don't love. Waking up next to you every morning inspires me for the whole day. I am a clock watcher at work now, only because I can't wait to be with you and our kids. You inspire me to do my best. Whether it's scraping the popcorn ceiling off, putting in a lawn, or hanging a picture, I know you will love my work no matter how bad it is. What more could a man want? I sure can't think of anything.
So what could I do for you on your birthday? Well, you know about the cake, and you know about the dinner. Maybe you should go check the mantel. Look for a little box. Open it up before I get home and let me know what you think when I walk through the door.
I love you. You are the dearest thing in life to me. Thank you for being you. Thank you for the fact that when your birthday is over, you will go on being you and I can take security in that for years to come.
Of two things I am sure: You are the most beautiful woman in the world, and I am the luckiest man.
I Love You Kelly,
Wade
