GMBB (4) Happy Birthday Granniemose from your lovin' labsOct 22 '02 (Updated Nov 13 '02) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Happy Birthday from Chuckie and Whitney, who begged (literally) to be allowed to share. I just realized I was taking this too seriously! And the other members of my immediate family also wanted to contribute to this Birthday Celebration for their favorite human, who they call Grandma. Chuckie and Whitney are labs. Chuckie is the younger, and is big lovable, and often gets into trouble. Whitney is the alpha dog, and thinks she is boss-of all of us. And the truth is, she may be right. Grandma gives these dogs love, and gentle caresses, extra treats, and appreciates them when theyre cute, and talks to them as well. Whitney sleeps in Grandmas room, and takes her dirty clothes out of the hamper to make herself a bed. Whenever she sees Mom about to get up, she gets up from wherever she is, and sits down at Grandmas feet to get some extra lovin. While this is annoying, it is also a sign of great affection. Sometimes, in passing on her way to more important things, she plants a kiss on Grandmas hand, just to show her that she loves her. Chuckie, when he was a little pup, always wanted to sleep with Grandma on her bed. Now, however, it is an either /or situation, although when she is on the computer, he often goes up there to sleep. Chuckie lives to eat, and he misses getting his little treats from Grandma. But mostly he misses her telling him hes loved. Both dogs are mooning around the house now, waiting for her to return. They never come back in the house without checking every corner to see if she is hiding from them. While allowing them to participate in Granniemoses birthday bash may seem silly to some, I felt it was important to allow them some freedom of expression. Whitney, the black lab is Miss Personality herself. She displays attitude almost constantly. She talks, in definite nuances of tone and intent, and since Grandma came to stay with her, she too wakes up groaning a little every morning. She monitors Granniemoses time on the computer, barking at her to get off when she has been on too long, and barking when it is time to eat, or wake up. She is very bossy. The first item is a tale of Chuckie. He is a big dog, and scares people by his size. But in truth, he hasnt got a mean bone in his body. He is the most loving and sweetest dog I have ever had. THE SHAME OF BIG CHUCKIE I was finishing chores when I looked around hard to see my brown lab escaping the yard He squeezed his fat body neath the fence like a snake And trotted off fast , leaving prints in his wake T was a thing my old Chuckie knew not to do Sneak out of the yard, at dinnertime, too! But the call of the wild was too much for his soul He had to escape, exploring, his goal. And often he left little gifts of his leavings in neighbors clean yards , no one was believing It wasnt malicious just fun and so cool He thought it was precious, that gift of his stool. Oh no, I thought as I ascended the staircase To change into shoes to continue the chase. I worried that Chuckie would collide with a car And be turned into road kill, before going too far. I hurried and out the front door I did fly When past came the neighbor with narry a Hi He glared at me as my heart beat alarms, Clutching his puppies tight in his arms. I called my bad dog, thinking the worst when out from his hiding like a bullet he burst His face was all stricken, his tale tucked in fear He raced to the door before I said Here He ran in the door as soon as he could And hid by the sofa, trying to be good Now what could it be that made him so weak To be cowering inside?-but I saw him peek Out the window at daschunds at home with their master He was afraid of these wieners, and he ran all the faster Away from their shrill little barks of dog-hate Thats the shame of big Chuckie, a wussie, this date. FROM WHITNEY TO HER GRANDMA Oh Grandma I sure miss you! No one seems to care How much I groan and grumble While lying by your chair. No one comes to pet me When Im feeling oh so low. Mommy is a real jerk I have to let you know. She doesnt give me tidbits From her breakfast every morn She stays by that computer And leaves me all forlorn. Im waiting by the door for you You have to rescue me Save me from my mommy She drives me up a tree. She yells at me for barking She doesnt see my Quest She kicks me off the bathroom rug Ive rumpled for my nest. I wish that you would hurry home With every sighing breath If you are gone much longer Ill surely starve to death. FROM THE CHUCKSTER I looked all over everywhere and couldnt find you. Have you forgotten me? Im grinning hear from ear to ear Im so cute but no one sees me Am I cute no more? Have you found another dog? Whenever the door opens I run all waggy to greet you but it is no one, not even a postman to bite, or bark at. Not even a squirrel to chase, or a cat to tease me and run away too fast for my clumsy paws to touch. Oh Grandma say youll be back Mommy doesnt give us extra stuff at night just dog food or stuff she does not want. My heart is breaking I need for you to say GOOD DOG to me. CHUCKIE AND WHITNEY TOGETHER Oh grandma we sure love you you make us jump for joy We want to make you happy like a good little girl and boy. We promise not to fight too much Or make you yell at us We promise to be behaving So you wont have to fuss. Oh HAPPY BIRTHDAY Grandma! we hope youre having fun!
