Good multiplayer
Written: Jun 29 '01
Pros:Fun, very modular
Cons:Excessive memory errors, network troubles
The Bottom Line: Play it with friends, not idiots. If someone is cheap with you, be cheap back with them.
I got this game back when I didn't have a cable modem, so I only played offline. It was pretty fun, and I tried playing multiplayer sometimes, but it was totally pointless. Don't try playing this game without broadband.
I didn't like some of the interface inside the game. When the game server list is being downloaded, the mouse lags like crazy making it impossible to do anything. I wish they could have left the cursor regular so I could still use it.
The pings for the game server browser were way off sometimes. Several times, the ping would end up being 4. Even when I was on a 26.4 connection, some would still end up being 4. Don't ask me why. Maybe someone at macsoft likes the number 4.
Also, sometimes pings would be around 60 or so and I would join the game and have a 1500 ping. Other times, I would have the game server browser open for a long time, and servers would be listed as having a certain map active, when actually it is long gone. The info in that browser should update a lot more than it does now.
Trying to join games can be difficult. Most of the time, all games listed are either full or empty. When trying to join a full server, it gives some cryptic message that has nothing to do with a full server.
Also, when package downloads are required to join a server can act very strange. Maybe a server has a custom map, and I have that map installed, but it will still make me redownload the map again. Very strange. Sometimes it would make me download it then it would stall, I would reconnect and it would say I had a version mismatch from a file I just downloaded from the server!
Also sometimes UT would just randomly quit with a memory error, even though I have 384MB of RAM and UT has 256MB allocated.
There are quite a few strange bugs and things, but that's when you're not playing. Playing is a lot lot lot better.
Plenty of weapons, pretty much balanced, great AI (but friends are more fun to kill). Unfortunately people end up being very unfair, making the game horribly frustrating.
One of the most popular maps online (Facing Worlds) is way unbalanced. There are tons of places for people to snipe, and everyone knows where the redeemer and damage amplifier is. If a person walks out into the open, they are 100% sure to be killed within a few seconds. People have just gone crazy and everyone is so good that the game isn't fun anymore.
ANYWAYS if you play with close friends who aren't cheap and the game doesn't crash then it can be hours of fun, but that is a big IF. There are lots and lots of mods that people have made to change UT into a new game every day.
