In thinking up of this romance mix, I tried to look into different genres of music since I tend to tire of the same sound dealing with the same subject. What I came up with is pretty diverse and I'm quite pleased - I'm trying to keep this list minimal since I can only listen to love songs for so long. Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it: ----- 1. "Whenever, Wherever" - Shakira For a romance mix, "Whenever, Wherever" is a somewhat unconventional track to start things off - and I like it that way. From mid-tempo Eastern beats to words that flow like poetry and even some yodeling, this song is an original that makes the best example of loving for the sake of love itself: "Baby I would climb the Andes solely To count the freckles on your body Never could imagine there were only Ten million ways to love somebody" 2. "Feelin' Love" - Paula Cole I discovered this song off the "City of Angels" soundtrack and it instantly struck me as more sensual than overtly sexy as some of its lyrics would suggest. Paula Cole sang the song during the span of a four-minute orgasm - well, that's what it sounds like anyway. ;) It's erotica for your ears; consider the tamer lyrics: "You make me feel like splendor in the grass where we're rolling Damn skippy baby, you make me feel like the Amazon's running between my thighs..." 3. "Every Breath You Take" - The Police Sure, the lyrics lean a little too close to obsession, but this classic is still a love song and a damn fine one at that. It's great music to stalk to - you know, if you're into that sort of thing. 4. "Can't Help Falling In Love" - UB40 Elvis sang the original and A*Teens updated it, but I prefer UB40's funk-reggae version of "Can't Help Falling In Love". It was back one summer in the 90's that I heard this song and I couldn't help falling in love with it - the sound was very different and new to me back then, and still is. Listening to it brings back memories of my early youth... 5. "Dreaming of You" - Selena Mexican star Selena allowed us a glimpse of her talent with "Dreaming of You" before her untimely death. Her sweet voice accompanied by simple instrumentation made this easygoing ballad a gem to listen to. 6. "I Love You Always Forever" - Donna Lewis "Those days of warm rains come rushing back to me Miles of windless summer night air Secret moments shared in the heat of the afternoon Out of the stillness soft spoken words Say, say it again I love you always forever" How could I not love a song that invokes memories of hot summer days and beautiful summer nights? This track, with its quick, pulsing beat and lush lyrics is heavy with atmosphere and sublime imagery, making this tribute to love a better sugar high than rock candy. 7. "Experience Pearls" - Ace of Base This is one of the more obscure songs on the mix, but has been one of my personal favorites for a long time. I've always thought the music was beautiful, using light instrumentation and a haunting beat for a mellow effect. The lyrics also are also beautifully strange: "When sand strikes up in your eyes I will cover your face I'll plant your desert with roses And I'm gonna keep, keep them for you And so I've made up my mind I'm gonna be yours this time I'm gonna teach you to trust And learn how to burn" 8. "A Woman's Worth" - Alicia Keys I consider this R&B at its finest: soulfully sung and honestly written, not to mention, it's a good reminder of what a woman - and man - is worth. Make no mistake, though - this song is not totally one-sided... "'Cause a real man knows a real woman when he sees her And a real woman knows a real man ain't afraid to please her And a real woman knows a real man always comes first And a real man just can't deny a woman's worth" 9. "Sexual (Thunderpuss Club Mix)" - Amber You gotta play this song when the heat is on. It's not dirty - it's one-dimensional. 10. "One & One" - Robert Miles My favorite trance master produced this little piece of work that never fails to bring a smile to my face. The female vocals have a touch of innocence that gives this song a very uplifting effect. Another good thing is that the lyrics are real easy to sing along to. "One and one still is one..." - real cute. 11. "Heaven (Candlelight Remix)" - DJ Sammy & Yanou feat. Do One of the summer's biggest club hits has been stripped of the techno beats and replaced with a piano background, fully exposing Do's tender vocals in this Bryan Adams cover. It's not called the Candlelight Remix for no reason - this is the perfect song to romance over dinner or complete the mood in any close setting. Seriously, this is an essential track. **Bonus - (are there bonus tracks in romance mix tapes?) "November Rain" - Guns N' Roses The biggest rock ballad from the 80's is an eight-minute experience that pleases me to no end. Although the lyrics doesn't make a point of embracing all the joys of love, it's painfully beautiful and in many cases true - "'Cause nothin' lasts forever And we both know hearts can change And it's hard to hold a candle In the cold November rain" I'd definitely take this over Celine Dion any day. "I Do Both Jay and Jane" - La Rissa How fun is this song? (Especially for those who go both ways!) I'd include this song in any mix - the sound is sexy as hell, the triphop beats are infectious and nothings says romance like singing an ode to the best of both worlds. Consider: "Jane is sweet like honey, the taste I'm teasing She knows how to hit the spot, her touch is pleasing Jay is strong like brandy, the strength I'm feeling He knows how to make me hot, his heat is healing, babe He is a special man, long, rough, and rugged She is a diamond, she shines like a nugget I've got to have them both you just don't understand Sometimes I call on Jane, sometimes I need a man I do both Jay and Jane They both make me feel the same..." HOT. And that's the end. ----- Thanks for reading, *november-rain* |
