Logitech's crowning achievement!
Written: Dec 16 '06 (Updated Dec 19 '06)
Pros:Comfortable, easy to get used to, sleek and attractive.
Cons:None at all.
The Bottom Line: I've never seen/used a better product than the USB Logitech Marble Mouse. For the price I paid it is a steal and you can find them under $20 now.
I probably sound like I just bought this item by the title of this but I have to say I have owned, used this daily for several years, probably around the turn of the millennium. Works flawlessly and reliable. I can't tell you how many mice I've been through (wired and wireless) prior to this trackball. The only other input device I have purchased since this Logitech Marble Mouse is the Kensington equivalent, which I have reviewed here: Kensington Orbit Optical. I still prefer the Logitech to the Kensington for day to day use. They both track really well but the ball is kind of small on the Logitech, which is one of the things I actually PREFER.
Form and Function:
I love the way it feels in either hand (yes folks, you can use this with left or right hand!) and the ball is perfect for using with index finger so no need to move at the wrist. I deal with people that get carpal tunnel syndrome pretty regularly and this trackball will alleviate that kind of stress on the wrist, so 5 gold stars for Logitech's smart design. Nice gun-metal grey plastic base that is low profile so your palm cradles it perfectly. The ball is red with tiny black dots that act as places the laser can track which controls movement which is dead -on accurate, no more erratic mouse movements! The almond shaped darker grey left and right buttons are ergonomic and not in-the-way but perfect and the switch seems sturdy enough. No bad switches and mine is probably 6 or 7 years old.
CD Package:
The software package is intuitive and east to use/customise the functions of the trackball buttons and scroll/auto-scroll features. I am probably in the minority that actually prefers the way the trackball tracks without the software and prefer the Microsoft standard driver for the Logitech.
Conclusion:
One of the things I am amazed by is that such a simple device like this is so easily taken for granted. I realize this greatly when I have to open a program in DOS or safe-mode and need to use a wired, non USB mouse. I honestly think my life is better for having something like this I use in everyday life. The only thing that could make this better is if the same exact Logitech Marble Mouse came in a wireless edition, and perhaps an additional scroll wheel working independantly of the ball.
