"THOSE MAYANS WERE EVERYWHERE, ALTUN HA BELIZE"

Nov 04 '02 (Updated May 09 '05)

The Bottom Line Worth the trip.

Thirty miles north of Belize City and a few miles in from the coast lies the remains of one of the most important centres of the Mayan world. Rising out of the jungle Altun Ha (Water of the Rock) was a major trading centre for the Mayans between 250 and 900 AD, until like the rest of Mayan society it fell into decline.

The excavated site consists of thirteen major temples and structures grouped around two main plazas. The site is reasonably compact and can easily be seen in a couple of hours.

The largest and most impressive structure is the grass covered Temple of the Masonry Altars in Plaza B. Archaeologists have determined that it was here that copal was burned and intricately carved jade structures were smashed as a sacrifice.

In Plaza A are the remnants of the tomb, know as the Temple of the Green Tomb. This was the final resting place of a Mayan King who died circa 600 AD. Numerous riches have been uncovered here including pottery, pendants, and shards of other jewellery.

Among the artefacts recovered here are numerous pieces of jade. Jade was important in Mayan society but is not native to this region. This helps to prove the theory that Altun Ha was a major trading centre.

Among the better known pieces found here is Kinich Ahau. This six-inch high Jade bust of the Maya Sun God is the largest piece of Maya jade sculpture ever uncovered. This image now adorns Belize currency notes. The original has a new safe resting place in the secure vault of the Belize Bank.

Unlike the better know sites of Tikal and Copan in neighbouring Guatemala and Honduras, Altun Ha is relatively easy to access. It is a short ride from Belize City either by taxi or for those with time to kill local bus. It is even possible for those on cruise ships to make it there, and more importantly back during the port stop over in Belize City. Alternatively organised tours can be arranged in Belize City by various travel agencies there.

The site is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.. Admission is $5.00 Belize or $2.50 US. A snack bar, gift shops, and rest room facilities are available on site.
