| dcdude's Full Review: Dell Dimension XPS T600 |
Let me start by saying when I ran into this PC I came STRAIGHT from a 150MHZ flop of a computer, so just imagine my drastic change in speed. When looking into getting a new computer I compared the obvious:speed, software, name, upgradeability, and most important, PRICE. I checked the usual companies for PC's, HP, Compaq, etc. I first looked into HP. Good name, sporty looking futuristic PC tower look, good price. But when I really did my homework on these computers I found out they couldn't be upgraded other than the usual components, and they motherboards couldn't be removed for repair purposes.
Next I moved to Dell. A name I had only seen advertised on TV, never in any newspaper ad or store display. After seeing their price and whatnot, I headed online. I went to many a Dell site and did as much research as possible, and decided for a full fledged computer head, casual PC gamer, and all out internet activist, this was the PC for me. I chose the online "Build-A-PC" site at Dell.com and built a PC for myself. 750MHZ, 128 Megs of ram, 30 gig hard drive, DVD AND CD-RW, of computing goodness, all packed in a convenient white box.
The computer arrived in less than a week. This is what REALLY got me lovin' Dell! As soon as my PC came, I ripped it outta the box and hooked her up. The convenient although un-needed(for myself anyway) color coded poster on how to set up the PC will help lots of you all out there with hookin yer' computer up. As soon as it was all set up I turned the beast on. After coming outta the 5 minute boot ups of my god forsaken old PC, this quick 30 second boot-up was a wonder. The software was kinda skimped, but enough for the person who doesn't need a million trial copies of McAffe(sp?) Antivirus(the Dell has a full version of Norton).
After a week or two of normal use my monitor decided to crash on me. No power was getting to it. So I contacted tech support, they said after all I did there was nothing to be done, and to send the monitor in for a replacement. To my surprise the VERY next day, the UPS man came to pick up and deliver my brand new monitor! You've really outdone yourself this time Dell!
Well with all the raving there HAS to be some ranting. And there is. For those of you like me who tend to "forget" to delete unwanted applications, you hard drive gets pretty filled up. And well when that happens, this computers RAM just plunges, suddenly my computer stutters restarting and sometimes booting up. This was fixed with a quick(and needed) formatted hard drive and 256 Meg RAM upgrade. And just in case it didn't happen again I added another 30 gig hard drive.
For the PC go'er like myself, you can't go wrong with this PC. And while I do want to get a 1.4 GHZ(or more) processor in the future, this will hold me back til' I have the cash.
