GREAT LITTLE PALM

Written: Jul 01 '01
Pros:Affordable and Convenient Organizer
Cons:Entry Level fixed memory not for Power Users (2MB)
The Bottom Line: For the student or anybody who is on a budget, the PALM M100 will work sans the bells and whistles of higher models. Definitely worth the price (currently around $100).

Shopping for my first palm pda was not a simple task. Even in the tiny Asian country (Philippines) that I live in, there are scores of PDA's that are available in shops. PALM Inc. makes a lot of models not to mention those from IBM, Handspring, etc.
Three Factors made me choose the PALM M100
1.)PRICE - the average "Juan" in our country earns around $1,000.00 per year. Thus, price is a major consideration. Some of the Palm models costs upwards of $300. That is simply too much for regular folks like us. With this palm coming in at around $170 (with a free leather case), this palm is definitely affordable for people from New York to Timbuktu.

2.)FEATURES - PDA's are definitely a Godsend for people who live in the city. Tons of addresses, phone numbers and appointments are neatly and efficiently compiled and available for use at a later date. PALM OS is the king of the hill right now and PALM M100 brings all the goodies to the palm of your hand. It has address book that can store thousands of entries, years of appointments, to-do items (my favorite), and notes (in your own handwriting). The free program allows you to synch your PALM with the desktop computer. I also was able to install reader programs (like TOME RAIDER) where you could get tons of free books (on any subject) and read it on your PALM. The only disadvantage is its small memory (2mb) which is also NON-UPGRADABLE. That means super large files such as the BIBLE, ENCYCLOPEDIAS cannot be fitted into the M100.

3.)PORTABILITY & RELIABILITY- Its so convenient to bring. With its light weight (120 grams) and small size, I place it in my belt pouch and its ready to spring into action anytime. I've been using this PALM for more than six months and the battery life is about 1 month (with heavy use) or 2 months (with moderate use). It was been banged up a bit but it continues to perform up to expectations. Its rugged casing is nice. Additional Faceplate covers with colors are available but at a semi-expensive ($20) price. I think I will pass on the covers.
