Pros: Reads DVDs with no problems
Cons: Has tons of problems when it comes to reading other disks
The Bottom Line: I think its the most pathetic drive to have ever been developed on the face of the earth.

| korned_beef's Full Review: Sony DVD-ROM Internal Drive (5x) |
I think that's what DVD should stand for in the case of Sony's DDU220E
The Sony DVD drive seems to have been really good as it was able to convince my pop about going for one (I'm talking about 2 years ago.) At that time DVD was a very new technology (for me atleast)
I had a P233 taken out of the country with me and my folks were stranded with a 386!
So my folks decided to go for a new machine (PII 400) equipped with a DVD drive and that too by Sony!
After coming back to the country (2 years later) and trying out a couple of my favorite CDs on this new machine I was astounded by the DVD drive, for it couldn't read CDs for peanuts! The Sony DVD drive is the most pathetic drive I've ever inserted a CD into yet. It has a lot of trouble installing games, and other mutimedia software like "encarta" which I love to use. The operating noise can be very irritating. Sometimes it sounds as though the disk is getting peeled inside the drive! Many times the drive just keeps reading and reading until my machine ultimately hangs up. When I insert the same disk into another drive I had no problems with it. In my place I've got 3 drives, one is this, another is an Acer 12X8X32 CD-RW and the last one is an ASUS 45X. The RW and the DVD drive sit in one machine and the ASUS 45X on the other (ie. The P233 which I luckilly brought back) For n Number of times (where n = 1 to infinity) I've had problems reading disks with the DVD drive. And for n Number of times I've not got a problem with the other drives unless it was a nasty gash across the disk.
Sometimes for no apparent reason the disk would stop being read by the drive. And I lost alot of material to malfunctions.
For eg in 3d studio Max R3 if I wanted material from the disk, I would have a tough time to actually retrieve it. The dealers would not except this drive back. And now I'm stuck with it.
But through every dark cloud there exist a silver lining... And the best thing this drive can do is read DVD disks. I've watched DVD movies with no problems whatsoever. But Normal CDs leave alone CD-Rs and CD-RWs don't work properly and so I insist that you don't buy this drive. That's why in order to enhance my computer I recently added a fast RW to do work with my other disks and make back up of some.
So please do check out another DVD drive before buying this one. For unless and untill you want to read just DVDs go in for this. If you want it to do more, avoid it.
Please note I've not included the price as the drive came bundled with the PC.
