The Bottom Line If you go flat panel, go digital and if your computer doesn't have a digital video card; upgrade. Otherwise...stick to your old CRT.

I'm a kind of 'glorified novice', in the area of selecting monitors, but I've had the opportunity to learn a fair amount by 'building' computers at the www.dell.com site (their "Learn More" links are an excellent source of detailed information on the particulars of monitors, both standard CRT and Flat Panel LCD).

I've always enjoyed the non-glare flat panel LCD monitors, but found there were a few thing to know before purchasing one.:

First, there are two basic types of flat panel LCD monitors; digital and analog (note: some flat panel monitors can be hooked into digital or analog video cards).

Digital is preferred, but only truly beneficial if your computer has a digital video card, otherwise you won't reap the full benefit of your new digital monitor's potential, which amounts to crisp images, more colors and enhanced 3D affects.

An analog LCD flat panel along with a standard analog video card? It's not worth it. The only purpose served is a savings on space. The downside is viewing quality. You'll experience a blurred effect and wish you kept your old CRT monitor.
