| csxpert's Full Review: B&W DM604 S2 |
The 604s are the most popular B&Ws and for a reason. They deliver astounting audio reproduction at a conservative price (relatively speaking). The 604 is part of the 6-series lineup which include the center channel CC6, diffuse surrounds DS6. I use the ASW1000 subwoofer which complements the other 6-series components very well.
One of the main issues when buying these speakers is the power of your amp. I use a Denon AVR4800 THX Ultra to power the speakers in 5.1 mode (for movies) which is fine but for 2 channel audio I use a ROTEL 1080. The ROTEL gives these speakers the juice needed to open up the soundstage. Another reason to use a fine amp like a ROTEL (or Bryston, Krell etc. if you have the $$$) is that these amps are higher current and are able to drive the speaker in a more controlled fashion.
Dynamic separation is superb, which means that at a given instant the highs and lows are very well reproduced together without percievable distortion. Timbre is also very accurate. Listening to the spanish guitar in the opening scenes of Gladiator is just amazing and highlights the speakers' timbral accuracy.
I would recommend small speaker stands to elevate them, I got a better response this way. However it all depends on your listening environment so its best to experiment with different locations.
I strongly recommend a sub-woofer to complement the sound as the bass response is lacking in these speakers. A sub-woofer should nicely make up for this shortcoming.
The CDM series are also worth looking into if your budget is a bit flexible. Overall these speakers are worth the investment and will deliver years of pleasurable listening! Enjoy!!
