Science fiction? It's a setting, not a style.

It's one of those many things that has both a positive side and a negative one. Annoying how so much of the world works that way!

Thank you; I'm glad you like. I have way too much fun with the rpg stuff. :)

I'm not saying that genre titles aren't useful sometimes, just that Sci-Fi get a bad rep because people associate the connetations that come with the setting with whatever story and whatnot that are actually there.

Like the web resource by the way, always good to find some Mage stuff somewhere - or just general roleplay etc.

"Much more fun than the plethora of "very helpful"s with no comments!"

*laugh* I like the way you think!

Interesting timing, because I started reading a book on writing SF & Fantasy (by David Gerrold) the other day. He was talking about what makes an SF or F story an SF or F story... things like "what if" questions, and feelings of wonder, and exploration, and stuff like that. :) (I think the book is called "Worlds of Wonder;" you might like it. Gerrold has an amusing and fun style, and makes some great points, even if I don't entirely agree with everything he says.)

I admit, genres do make a convenient way to find stories one is more likely to enjoy... (I say, as a fan of horror, then SF, then fantasy, in that order.)

Ok, so it's not as helpful. But just look at the amount of comments I get. Much more fun than the plethora of "very helpful"s with no comments!

But I like genres! (Reply to this comment)

I like knowing if a book falls in a particular genre. That helps me avoid reading anything marked "Literary Fiction." :D

Not OT certainly. You do mention favorite series, and (very briefly) what you like about them.

Personally, I've come to embrace the compartmentalization of SF. It keeps undesirables out!

Oh that's ok, and it's fair enough. I didn't write this particular thing with any particular eye towards ratings - this was just me seeing something that annoyed me and ranting for a bit.

Actually, I personally think and "Off Topic" thing might be most appropriate ^_^

My rating... (Reply to this comment)

Hi! I should explain my rating, particularly as so far I've really liked your reviews. :)

I like the editorial you've written, and in large part agree with you (have you ever read the Douglas Winter quote on horror that begins with "horror is not a genre" and ends with "horror is an emotion"?). Because people will come to this section expecting material to help them find "the best science fiction series," however, it would be more helpful if your editorial were part of a larger article that gave more detail on one or more of your favorite series, instead of being almost entirely editorial.

Does that make some sense, I hope?

P.S., should you decide to expand this, please feel free to email me the url and ask me to re-rate.

I did think about including you, but come on, be honest - there are a lot less of you. Plus even if there are some of you it doesn't change the general perception...

That said, power to the female geek contingent!

Don't forget us geek-girls! There are women who read and enjoy science fiction as well.
