The Bottom Line Brake pads wear down between 15-and 20k. Have them replaced. DO NOT listen to your Volvo mechanic!
So, after allegedly "playing by the rules," and getting every scheduled service at the dealership where I purchased my Volvo S40 in 2001, I'm stuck with a bill for new brake rotors. At my 22500 mi checkup, the mechanic told me I didn't need to worry about changing the pads yet. This time at 30k, I've been informed that IT'S TOO LATE. I must have the pads AND THE ROTORS replaced to the tune of 400.00 plus labor! I tried to assert that I was just following directions, but the slippery service manager only argued that he can't be responsible for "variable wear and tear" on the part. Turns out that the s40 brake pads wear down exceptionally fast--between 15-20k miles. Of course, nobody told me that until it was too late. Now everyone--even the phone operator at the Volvo USA customer service line--says they know that the brake pads are especially soft on this model. Just thought I'd pass this info along. Also, STAY AWAY from the S/V 40 models until they work out this problem. |
